Another sippy cup thread I'm afraid! Anyway, I've tried several cups without having any luck, and recently bought a Nuk non spill learner bottle which he seems to like and will drink from, but I have to hold it up for him because when he holds it himself he doesn't realise he's got to lift it up to get water from it. Does anyone have to do this?

Also, do you feed your LO their milk in a cup? The thing isn't LO has 8oz at a time, and most cups don't hold that much! And there's no measurements on most which means I would have to make it up in his usual bottle and pour it into a cup. Or shall I just leave him to drink his milk from bottles and just give his water in a cup? Sorry for the 101 questions lol!

Hey there. With our other two, I would only give the sippy cup with meals, so b-fast, lunch and dinner, and only 4 ounces. The rest of the feeds were strictly 8 ounce bottle feeds. Sippy cup was only given in the highchair, with actual meals, and for a while, until they get the hang of it, you have to recline the highchair and hold the cup for them. It can take a while for babies to learn to properly hold the cup. Our youngest will be 5 weeks tomorrow, so I haven't started doing this yet again. Also, at 12 months you wean off the bottle completely, so shortly after a year, all liquids are given by sippy cup. I would definitely start with using a handled "Nuby" cup. They have a soft spout and are easiest for baby's transition.

Haha, I could have written this myself!! We have so far been through 6 sippy cups. She will happily drink from any of them but either cant or wont tip it up herself. I cant decide if she genuinely doesnt understand or is just plain lazy! She picked up my friends' baby's sippy cup (identical to one of hers) and tipped it up to drink from it, but will she do it with her own???? No she bl**dy wont!!!!! She is 12 months old now so I am hoping she will get to grips with it soon.

I tried moving her from formula bottles to cows milk in a sippy cup but she didnt understand it and (understandably) seems only to associate milk with her bottles. So at the moment she has milk in bottles and water in sippy cups. She has tried an Avent sippy cup, 2x Tommee Tippee, 2x Nuby (with and without handles), and one other that I cant remember the make of.

To be honest, sippy cups are the bane of my life, its a very long battle we have been having and I dont seem to be anywhere near winning it yet!

Hi, sorry to just butt in but I'm Gemma from Nuby :) There are LOTS of children who will not tip up cups, you could always try with a silicone straw beaker, they just drink as they would from a normal straw (hold the beaker upright) but our cups/beakers are none spill. Here's some links to our most popular none spill straw beakers https://www.nuby-uk.com/drinking/straw_drinking Gemma x

Thank you for this advice, I'll definately continue to give him his milk in his bottle for now and his water in his cup. As long as he's getting his milk that's all that's important.

I know they're a nightmare aren't they, spent an arm & a leg on cups so far lol!

Thank you Gemma, I'm going to have a look at a straw beaker and probably give it a go

The only advice I can give is to keep trying! Some babies take to a sippy cup better than others. I agree with the others, in to offer sippy cups at meals first then other times of the day as you begin to wean off of bottles. Ones with handles do make it easier for them to tip, at least in my experience. If you keep showing LO, he will get the hang of it eventually. I just gave little guy his sippy cup for the first time this weekend, he was not impressed so far LOL

My LO doesn't tip it if i'm around but a few times i've had my back to him and when i've turned around he's merrily drinking from it properly - it's a bit hit and miss though. I've recently started using some of the avent 6m+ soft spouts with the trainer handles that fit onto the normal avent bottles both for water and milk (only 1 feed for this so far) and he seems to be doing better with this especially for milk as it otherwise looks just like his normal bottles that he's used to so it's less of a change...

don't know what bottles you use but it might be worth seeing if they do a spout teat that would fit.

You may not be interested in it as it can be messy, but my LO loves the doidy cup and she's only 5 months. She hated sippy's.

Nickykb- My LO has tommee tippee bottles for his milk, and I'm not quite sure if they do trainer spouts for them but I'll have a look, thank you.

And coffeepuffin... I've never seen them cups before, I'm impressed with your LO!! Do you think it's worth giving it a go, I assume you hold the cup for her yeah?

I definitely think it's worth a try. She holds the handles and I just hold the bottom to keep it steady but let her drink it at her own pace. Because of the way it's designed they don't have to tip their head back to drink, which is what she was having trouble with with the sippy cups. Obviously it's not practical for when you're travelling, but indoors it's great. Expect a bit of mess though. She sometimes gets over excited about it all and thrashes the cup about! But I've thrown her sippys out, sticking with the doidys now.
