Cot bumpers

We use one  My LO likes to move upwards in her cot, so to prevent her hitting her head on the bars, I choose to us e abumper. In my mind, the risk of her bashing her head all the time is far higher than the risk of lack of circulation. And it's only a half bumper; it's not all around the cot.

they wouldn't sell them if they weren't okay to use IMO

Yeah, i think i agree with this. My mother used bumpers with me and my four other sisters so ill still use one. Just had a slight concern at the back of my mind but its gone now.

Thankyou for all of your replies :flower:

I don't quite understand why FSID say that they have neither positive nor negative effects as in the US where i'm from they recommend against them and have even done research that shows that they are dangerous (I saw on on this website: https://safedreams.co.uk/safety.php). I know that the cot bumpers in the US are different but even so I wouldn't use one after reading this.

I have a mesh one called the airwrap which does the same job and is much safer. There is also the a new one called safe dreams which looks similar but comes in more colours.

HTH x

dont use them, never will. they have been linked to SIDS!

stupid question.... whats sids??

This isnt a 'dig' at you at all but I find it very shocking you dont know what SIDS is - just shows how well informed we are of one of the highest killers for infants!!! xxx

My little boy died from SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - its a lame cause of death, it basically means they dont know why the baby has died. It most commonly happens at night when the baby is sleeping, but can happen anywhere, carseat, even in your arms etc.

I did have a half cot bumper on dyl's crib until two nights ago when it very quickly got removed when I found him with his face completely squashed into it and panicked because I thought that there was no way he could possibly get a breath through it, luckily there was a gap between the bumper and mattress where the air must have been coming through!

I do put him feet to foot in the cot but he can easily kick himself upward now and roll about so I think that my lovely bumper will be getting resewn into some sort of decoration for the nursery now :(

Really sorry to hear about your little boy Hayley. I think lots of people refer to it as cot death rather than SIDS.

Lynz, a similar thing happened to me with my little boy, I can't actually can't believe bumpers are still on sale, it just shows that you can't trust that everything in the shops is safe.

Belle has one, but I have it tucked into the mattress at the top end of the cot bed. As the cot bed is on it's highest setting near the top so half of the bumper is tucked in. She has literally been put in there for the first time for a nap this afternoon, but she is in her moses basket to aclimatise (SP?) her to being in there for the first time. When she is in there properly, ie no moses basket, I will leave it, as I said it is tucked well in. When she gets bigger and we lower the mattress down, maybe I will review it. Depending on how much she wriggles up aswell.

How is a cot bumper any different to say the sides of a Moses basket, which we put babies in when they are most at risk from SIDS?

Which is why if you do have a moses basket it must not have padded sides!! which you will find the more expensive ones have :dohh: But at the end of the day they just dont know what causes our poor babies to die  x

I'm genuinly(sp) sorry to hear about your son but yes, I am a little offended... Because I was unsure of what a couple of letters stood for? I've obviously heard of ICD but wasn't too sure of SIDS. Sorry that i'm not so 'informed' as yourself or 'with it' with slang. I just didn't know what the intials stood for, however I do know what it is.:dohh:

We were given them by somebody and I am so glad we have them. Lexi is very active and nearly crawling, one day she ended up with a bruise on her temple, so I put the bumpers on and now she is fine and I don't need to worry about her head. I don't believe that it stops the air flow.

NuKe, The FSID (foundation for the study of infant death) say they have no positive or negative affects.

We had them on the cot until Ruby could pull herself to sitting from lying down, as that's what it says on the packet of the ones we got...

i have been misinformed! thanks for setting me straight!

i dont think we will be getting them tho, unless pops starts banging her head!

I personally cant see how you can be offended but if you are thats fair enough and I'm sorry. I was merely saying its the society we live in that makes us less informed of such a big killer, and it was in no way saying its your fault you do not know!! SIDS is not a slang it is a medical term for a baby dying!! Personally I'd much rather be 'informed' than find another baby dead, but thats just me!! :hugs: xxx

It is true that we should be informed but there is so much information nowadays that causes stress to parents that I'm inclined to think that knowing less about some things could be better- and I don't mean SIDS. There are always two sides of the coin. Also it is just impossibe to know everything!

Sorry about your loss, Hayley.. that is horrible :(

We have used them for both T and C since they were newborns and both of them are fine.

TBH I don't understand why people are getting upset because someone didn't know what SIDS was. As another person pointed out it is most commonly called cot death. Until Hayley lost Alex I didn't know what SIDS was

The girl merely asked a question because she genuinely didn't know. There was no need to get upset about it. She now knows what it is and has shown her compassion so there's no problem now is there :flower:

People ignite easily on this forum.. sigh..

i dont think there is anything to be offended about, Hayley was commenting on the fact that there is clearly a lack of info out there about SIDS, she wasnt slagging you off personally for not recognising the term. Hayleys son died. i think your use of the dohhh smiley was a little inappropriate, as was your comment about her being 'with it' re slang. its not slang, its the thing that killed her beautiful amazing first born son, a little sensitivity wouldnt go amiss.

I really really wasnt having a go at the lady, I mean about society and how they do not educate mothers as well as they could, its like SANDS, lots of people dont know about that charity, its not the peoples fault, just that baby deaths is a tabboo subject in this country iykwim?. I didnt mean to cause offence at all, I have already said I'm sorry. And if I can save just one baby dying from SIDS then Alex hasnt died in vain!!!

:hugs: xxx
