This isn't really baby related but wasn't quite sure where to post. I'm not starting a debate or heated discussion.. I am genuinely in awe of my thought. I've seen a couple of tickers that say "Human milk for a human baby"..And it got me wondering after seeing a cow feeding her baby in the field. If Cows milk is best for cows..And humans is best for humans.. Why don't they sell human milk in tesco's:shrug:.. Like I said not a debate I really am curious.

Well it takes me ages to express just a 6 oz bottle full so doing a 6 pinter for tescos would be a hell of a job !

I doubt there are too many women, who have that much to spare. Specially for a longer period.. So, I'd say it's because the supply doesn't match the demand.

id say its supply issues lol and also pasturising breastmilk kills off everything thats so great about it. also the health screening would be an issue as im not even aloud to donate milk to a milk bank at a hospital simply because I had a blood transfusion post birth with EJ , they can control alot more what ends up in a cow's bloodstream than they can a woman ie.. alcohol, nicotine.... etc....

Ha ha i think you should go on dragons den with that theory lol x

I'm sure producing enough milk to sell commercially would probably violate some (Most? All?) human rights. ;)
Maybe some day they'll have cows or goats that can produce milk closer to human. Which of course will be it's own can of worms. :nope:

I read on here someone said that buying EBM in canada cost $3 dollars or so per oz  (sorry cant remember who it was)
I told OH and as I express every night he said he thought he should buy a milking machine, hook me up and go into business  I think he was joking ......

There are probably numerous reasons why not ... its never been a consumable commodity, I spose. I donated milk and I kind of thought of it a bit like giving blood (ok i know its nothing like it but it made sense in my head lol) and you wouldnt be able to buy other bodily fluids just in a shop. Theyd have to be regulated, controlled, and most importantly taxed :)

All i thought of when reading this thread is loads of women hooked up to pumps like cows in a cow shed being milked :haha::haha: Its kinds funny in my head. Seriously though not sure about this, it would prob cost so much more to produce and do all the checks on than it would sell for. Good question though

Not many women are willing to donate, let alone make the incredible sacrifices required to meet a commercial demands for human milk. Cows can't object to being pumped with hormones and antibiotics and hooked up to milking machines for extended periods of time. It's hard enough for most women to express for their own babies.

ha ha u make me laugh good questiion im not sure we are going to find the answer to this one xx

That's what I was thinking.. Could tesco not make an industrial pumper? Obviously not locking women up in a shed but a bit like the sucker in monsters inc.

It's hard to find and depending on laws in your area sometimes not even possible to buy, but I've heard that raw goat's milk is the next closest analog to human milk. I looked into the possibility of buying that instead of using formula, but the laws here don't let the farmers sell it. I'd have to get my own goat. There is a recipe I came across to make it into infant formula.

This was my instant thought too. That'd definitely make for a funny comic strip or something. :haha:

I think it would take me weeks to fill a gallon jug of my milk. ;)

I truly think this is why extended breastfeeding should be more accepted though. Because it's milk made specially for our LOs so it's odd that people freak at the sight of a 2 year old BFing. Not really on topic but it plays in my head at times. Is it sad that I actually sympathize with those poor cows that have to be hooked up to milking machines? It must be awful!

It's like when you read articles about women who are using their bm for cooking, the usual response is 'ugh' but when you think about it, it's more natural than using the milk from another species, which is what we (mostly) all do!

It's not as commercially viable and would be unlikely to ever get mass produced on that scale. Though, it might do well in private, alternative medicine shops?
