Desperate for help! My baby won't take a bottle!!!!

Here's a great PDF:

Sorry if this offends but i cant believe how selfish you are! You baby will be a very hungry upset baby if you go away they not only feed from the boob they comfort suck and this calms them. With his mummy gone and also no boob for 7 days im sure it will break his heart. Like i said sorry if this upset or offends but i had to say something!

Oh boy :coffee: She's leaving baby with grandmother, not the creepy hobo behind Taco Bell.

Does creepy guy behind taco bell do baby sitting services? Please pass on my name and number, we really struggle with cheap childcare.
Thanks x

Yes he does, he's quite affordable, 30 minutes per chalupa and 60 minutes for the full nacho platter.

Really? That's good to know, ask him if he does overnight and I'll chuck in a hot bath too.

Hi Hun,

I had exactly the same problem with my breast fed baby - I had to go back to work, and he would not take a bottle. I tried everything, different teats, formula, bottles. In the end, I had to go back and by the end of the first day he took a bottle, grudgingly, but he took it. Is there any way you can leave him with someone else for a day? I'm pretty sure he will take a bottle if he has no other choice. Honestly, I spent three months trying to make him do it, and in the end he just took the damn bottle because he was hungry and I wasn't there. We used a tommee tipppee with a fast flow teat - my let down is really strong, and he got frustrated with slow flow teats. We also had it really warm as he prefers it to room temp milk.

"Sorry if this offends" means "I know it will offend but hey I'm going to say it anyway".

If you have nothing constructive to add then I suggest you don't say anything at all. Rudeness is not tolerated and as pointed out the forum is designed for support. Concentrate on those topics you can give constructive advice to not judgement and preaching.

:)

I had the same problem a little while ago.
I gave ds a bottle to 'play' with for a few days in his bouncer. I then progressed to feeding him whilst in his jumperoo when he was happy and distracted. Worked a charm.

He will only take a bottle in his walker, jumperoo or highchair he cannot be held otherwise won't take it.

Also he won't take expressed milk from anything he will only accept formula from a bottle, wasn't my first choice but i have to go back to work and if that's what he wants it's fine by me

Thank you all so much for the constructive advice and helpful tips!! I feel confident that he will take a bottle if I continue to be persistent about it, as we arent leaving for another 4 weeks.
As far as the negativity goes and the horrible response, you are entitled to your opinion, which I DID NOT ask for, nor do I care to hear. I have been, and always will be the BEST mom for my son. My taking a vacation with my husband who has worked his tail off through his company to earn us this FREE trip is completely deserved, warranted and does not make me any less of a mother! My mother, who lives states away, is dying to spend the week with her grandson and will do a FABULOUS job..

Oh and to answer some of you, I have tried the breastflow, the Dr Browns, a Playtex easy flow(i think thats what its called) and just a basic Medella 4oz bottle with a regular rubber nipple.. The last one was the only one he woudl take when he was a tiny baby.. I tried the Breastflow because I heard that was the best one to tryif having issues.. Im interested in this doidy cup...do they have to be ordered online? Can I find them at Target or the like?
I think I am going to try the "give him a warm bottle at the same time each day" tactic and hopefully, he wont just play with it after another week or so and actually drink it... I hope hope hope the bottle can be a source of comfort to him while we are away! My mother is wonderful, but she's not his mommy!

I got our doidy cup from amazon, i am not sure if they sell them in stores

I found little man likes his milk very warm which for a breast fed baby kinda makes sense as it comes from you at 36/37 degrees which is quite warm

I also found he prefers a fast flow teat, he could never get the hang of the slow flow (this is when he did finally take the bottle but that wasn't until 10 months, until then the doidy cup worked wonders :)

I've just remembered another tip I was given for when I was leaving LO with my mum on an occasion when she would need to give her a nap. Sleep with a muslin or blanket for a couple of nights so it smells of you, then give it to LO at bedtime to snuggle. You could always do this with a few muslins and leave them in your bed for you mum to grab one at a time!

My LO is breastfed and never took a bottle well. The longest I've left her was 4 hours, but she took a sippy cup (like, with a straw. she loves straws) and some food from others. She's 15 months and I still have to plan like you do as she nurses every 2 hours.

Will you still be pumping when you're gone to keep your supply up? Or will bottle feeding be the permanent feeding now?

Does your LO STTN? If your LO doesn't, that's the only problem I see as most nurslings have trouble going back to sleep without the boob.

But if LO STTN and has started solids, I'm sure they'll take a bottle when they have to. If they're hungry, they're going to eat. :)

Don't listen to the negative comments. Yes, baby needs Mommy, but there are times that Mommy can't be there for baby. It's not back a few centuries ago when Mommy was always around, it's a busy world now and sometimes these things happen.

LO will only take breastflow bottles. Have you tried having other's feed him the bottle and not you? I read if babies smell you they will expect the breast so maybe if OH does it, it will be easier for him to take. Also the temperature could be effecting him taking it. Also have you tried letting him hold it himself, they seemed to help us too for some reason he did not want us to help him he wanted to hold it all alone, kind of like how he holds the boob. good luck!

I wonder what the judgemental poster thinks of the mom who has to go back to work to support her child/family. Granted I take my baby to work with me, but I went back 7 days post partum...because I needed to.

^^no kidding^^ She must think you are horrible, lol!

I love the new suggestions..but what is a muselin?? is that a blanket? I have tried to let others feed him and he just end up playing with or chewing the bottle.. well the nipple anyway.. my husband really needs to, but hes not around during the day, so the only time he can try is bedtime and LO is too far gone then and only wants to nurse. I'mhoping this will get better once he will take the bottle during the day??

Yes, he is STTN, thankfully and is eating solids pretty well. He goes through at least 2-3 jars of baby food with an additional jar or 2 of rice cereal mixed with BM or applejuice. I like to make the cereal in the babyfood jars after he finishes the food out of them..it kind of tricks him into eating it as hes not too keen on his cereal but needs the iron..

Im getting a doidy cup now too:)

Thanks again!

Have you tried a nuby bottle? I got some with my free breast pump and the nipple is very much like a human nipple, with bumps to simulate the areola and everything! If a bottle is completely out, I agree with the cup. They fed my LO with a cup in the NICU and it worked so well. He still prefers boob, but he will happily take a nuby bottle as well.

Hawaii!!!! I miss it there :( I have family on the big island and my grandfather was born and raised there. It's a lovely place :) Don't take any volcanic rocks and anger Pele! :haha:

wow i must be lucky Arianna has taken a bottle and breastfeeds since birth! i use dr.browns and i give her the nubby sippy cup has handles so she can hold it good good luck hope it works out

and PS why does all the threads always a dispute lighten up jeez!:dohh:

I know a breastfed baby that mom went back to work and he hated bottles. He really enjoys the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottle. (shaped like a boob!). They got it at Babies R Us.

how exactly does the doidy cup work? No lid? Im a bit confused Im afraid

You sit the baby up and gently tip the cup and they lap at the milk. :)

lap, like a kitten. It's the same movement they use when bfing, lol.

that seems a bit strange. He can already take sips of water out of my cup and/or watter bottle..

And what is a muselin??
