Apologies if this is in the wrong forum thing.........

Diabetes help.....?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi ladies,

went for my 34 week appointment at the hospital yesterday and my bump is measuring spot on and he's head down. (I had to ask these questions as she wasn't saying a word - plus my appt. was supposed to be at 3pm and I didn't get seen until almost 5pm!!!)
Also found out they have lost my blood test results from when I had the glucose test.
Bearing in mind I had this at around 26/27 weeks, did they not think to call me and say "hey why haven't you had the glucose test? you need to have it"

So anyway, she said I have to go back and do them again.
Is it really the end of the world? I mean, wouldn't I know if I had diabetes? or is it one of those things with silent symptoms?
Would it be harming my baby if I did have it?

I'm 35 weeks on Sunday so I'm seriously thinking if it REALLY mattered really badly, then they would have called when they lost my bloods last time.......?

anyone with any "diabetes whilst pregnant" knowledge...... please advise!

xxxxxx

Hello, I personally would have the test done. I found out I had diabetes after my 28 week Glucose test. I'm 31 weeks now and in just three weeks I have had four additional appointments at the hospital and an extra growth scan. I am scheduled for another scan on Monday. They take it very seriously at my hospital and so they should. I will be monitored very closely from now on. Firstly, the scariest consequence (and I stress this would be a worse case senario) is that it can cause stillbirth if you go past your due date, they will therefore be inducing me earlier at 38 or 39 weeks to reduce the risk of that happening.
Secondly, and more commonly is that diabetes can stop your body from producing insulin effectively, insulin take the sugar out of your blood and turns it in to energy. If you don't look after you sugar levels with diet or insulin injections (or both) then too much sugar crosses the placenta to the baby and the baby grows too large, particularly around the shoulders. This makes natural childbirth very tricky as the head can pass through the vagina but the rest of the baby could get stuck which can result in shoulder dystocia.
I measure correctly from my dates and baby's head is down however the additional scan I had showed my baby is marginally bigger around the abdomen than normal. I also have no other symptons, urine samples are fine and was tested only because my Dad has developed Type 2 Diabetes in later life.
Of course it's your discision and I've just gone through the whole shock of finding out I have it so it's all raw to me. Pretty appalling that they lost your results though when you compare how serious my hospital have taken it!!
Good luck whatever you decide x

Diabetes symptoms usually include needing to toilet alot, being thirsty all the time and being tired. If you aren't having such symptoms, it probably means you aren't diabetic.

Im sorry, i have to disagree with this one..i have none of those symptoms, in fact i have no symptoms..yet i have GD. The only 'symptom' i have is that my fundal hight measures larger than it should, i had a growth scan for Baby at 27 weeks and he was spot on his dates..no one was worried. Then by accident i was given a GTT test as even now no one knows quite why it was booked for me..i had it at 28 weeks, the day after i had it i had 2 head MW's at my door with appointments for scans/renal clinic/dieticians/specialist MW's etc. In the weeks since then its been a blur of scans and appointments..yet i had no obvious symptoms..so i would have to say that not having symptoms means not a lot, only a GTT can tell you for sure..

I would push them for a GTT asap, in the next day or so, as you get the results within 24hrs if its bad news, then at least they know you have it and know what to do with you, regarding inducing you/scanning you/testing your blood to see your average blood sugar level over the past 3mths etc..basically so they and you are prepared if it is bad news, which i hope it isnt..x

thanks ladies, going to go and have it done today x

Def get the test done. I almost passed the 1 hour screening test, so my doc said I didn't have to take the 3 hour, but I said I wanted to take it anyways. I took it and didn't hear back from my doctor's office. I called and asked and they said if the results were worrisome I would be called right away. If not I could discuss the results with my doctor at my next appointment. So I didn't get a call for two weeks and figured I'd passed. Then when I saw my doctor he said I failed and have gestation diabetes!!!!!

Don't always assume no news is good news. Make sure you find out what your results are!

Hi. I completely agree. I'm diabetic and have no symptoms at all. But it is very important to know so that you have all the scans and monitoring and will probably be induced early as mentioned above. But the important thing to remember is not to panic. It is very manageable. Insulin injections are nothing if it comes to that. Once you get past the initial shock (for lack of a better word) it is not that scary. That is not to say you shouldn't take it seriously.

I agree too, the whole reason why they test for GDM while pregnant is that the symptoms of diabetes are the same as regular pregnancy symptoms (fatigue, excessive thirst/urination, etc) and so never assume that you are "fine".

:hugs: Good luck with your test!!!

I had no symptoms at all when I had it. The only thing is my measurements were larger than normal.
