Is it ok to drink diet soda while pregnant? I drank 1 can of diet sprite and now I feel guilty!!

I switched to regular caffeine free soda when I found out I was pregnant, i wanted to avoid caffeine and artificial sweeteners... but my cousin had a diet coke everyday in her 2nd and 3rd trimester and her baby is perfect! I think she tried to avoid caffeine during her 1st trimester so thats why she didnt have it then. But sprite and ginger ale are both okay :)

Diet sodas are fine! I'd be drinking some if the thought of it didn't make me want to hurl lol.

my midwife suggested i made it go flat and drink it to help with nausea, so its fine to drink. No need to feel guilty.. Enjoy!! X

I guess my concern is more about the aspartame in the soda? I've only drinken 1 today just to be safe. I don't drink any caffeine at all, but the artificial sweetners concern me.

It makes me annoyed that after all the research into aspartame and it being rat poison, that practically every drinks manufacturer still insists on using it. When will they learn and use something else??? Anyway rant over, this concerns me too. I'm told that sainsbury's don't use aspartame in their own drink products, not sure if it's true, but I'm going to go shopping there next and stock up if thats the case x x

i dont think theres any cause for concern with just one :) i think if there were any harmful effects of diet soda they are more so long term because of the aspartame. dont fret xx

I drink diet cream soda with no added sugars and it only has salt in. Amazing. I love it when I have it because the taste of water is so bland it sickens me! X

I have heard a lot of bad things about diet sodas and have just decided to go off all sodas right now. Although I think in moderation it would be fine. I used Splenda with my first and then later found out it wasn't a good idea. But I have heard with artificial sweeteners, that the body treats it like it is regular sugar because our brains cant tell the difference between them and so produces insulin which stores up fat so actually causes weight gain. Not that I'm saying you need to worry about that aspect :) I just gained so much with my first, I'm trying not to this time. I would think that since you aren't drinking a ton of it and just a little a day that it would be fine :)

Oy...if you want a diet soda then drink one. Caffeinated, not caffeinated....you'll be fine. Is it me or is pregnancy getting out of control these days? Feel well Hun and enjoy it!

I avoided all soda in the first trimester, and now I drink soda once in a while but don't make a habit of it. Caffeine-free soda is perfectly safe, but I don't like putting too many chemicals into my baby's body.

i think everything in moderation is ok really. i still have a cup of coffee or tea every now and then if i feel like it, and i don't think diet sodas would be any different. yeah the sweetners aren't exactly a health food, but there's rubbish everywhere if you start looking for it.
i wouldn't suggest having them for breakfast lunch and dinner, but if you fancy one then have it!

Im drinking caffeine free diet coke on a regular basis. I also drink about 10 cups of tea a day and have 3 sweetners in each one (I cant drink tea without it.) I read that Splenda was better but it tastes bogging so Im back on normal sweetner. x

I worry about this too. I have been craving diet soda from the fountain (not can or bottle). If I go past a fast food place when I'm thirsty, I grab myself a diet coke. I know everyone says "everything in moderation" but I'm not sure any aspartame is good for the baby, but I still give in to my cravings now and again. There are so many other things I have given up (especially my Starbucks) that I'm not sure I'm willing to go cold turkey on my Diet Coke:wacko:

Hi
I know exactly what you talking about. But I still go to stafback and have decaff skinny late or decaff skinny frapuchino. They are very delicious.
xx

I agree with everyone that says that in moderation these drinks are fine. There is enough to worry about already and if diet drinks were so harmful to unborn babies then they would not be available to buy in the shops. Stay away from smoking, drinking, and crack cocaine and you should be fine.

However, if you are bothered about the sweeteners, just go back to fat Sprite instead! You are pregnant, you are allowed a few extra treats. I usually drink Diet Coke but since being pregnant I have cut it out as I am using all my caffeine for precious coffee! but if you go out somewhere, coke is usually the only diet option. I figure a few non diet drinks a weeks won't make me huge.

If you struggle to keep down flat drinks, then you could use sparkling water with cordial or fruit juice. I've stocked up on loads on this, because I felt queasey, but since then feeling sicky has gone off. x x

I have had serious cravings for tonic water since being pregnant!
