Do you let your babies crawl around shops, cafes etc?

Maria is starting to resent sitting in the pushchair when we go out and do the shopping or go to the library or places like that and she fusses a lot.
I let her crawl in the library for a couple minutes at my feet to stop her screaming as I figured people would appreciate that but when I let her crawl in a cafe she got given some dirty looks by a middle aged woman there and I felt like she was supposed to be kept in the high chair :(
I just try and get through the shopping as quickly as possible so I dont let her out in the shops but she really doesn't like it!

Library probably. Ours does alot of children activities and seems to be kept very clean. A cafe probably not. Too much foot traffic coming in and out! What if you keep a few toys for her just for when you are out shopping?

No she could get in somebodies way and get stood on or cause them to trip with a hot coffee.A library yeah.

My LO isn't crawling yet but my friend is a restaurant manager. She always says people letting babies crawl or toddlers wander round is a nightmare, waitresses are carrying hot food and drinks and are often rushing around. I'd worry about the safety, even if they are very close by.
Do you have soft play centres near you? We have one near me that only charges £1 to get in (I know your not in the UK though), it has a coffee shop and little ones are welcome to roam around everywhere.

Yup, but our cafes are very quiet!

I always take some toys in the pushchair but she gets fed up with them and throws them out. She just really hates to sit still, the only other way to keep her happy sitting is to give her food!

The only soft play place here that I know of is a drive away but I do want to try it as its free for under ones. Just gotta persuede OH to drive us there.

It was a very spacious cafe, no one wandering around with hot drinks where we were (I kept turning her around when she went a few metres. The toddler we were with though was a whole other story, he kept running to the kitchen area! (we were on a playdate)

No she stays in the pushchair or a highchair when we are at cafes or restaraunts, I usually have snacks for her to munch on which keep her occupied or she has toys to play with, I let her on the floor in a jewellry shop the other day, but that was because they had little dacshund dogs and brought them out specifically so my LO could pet them lol x

are they only toys you take out? not the same ones she uses at home?

I saw a little boy with a little snack container today that had a little piece on the top that would only let him take out 2-3 cheerios at once. It was designed to be no-spill but definately kept this boy busy! I am sure it took him 20 minutes to eat his little cup of them! Maybe something like that?

no but only because she's a thumb sucker and all i can think about is all the dirt and grot on the ground and getting on her hands and thumb which is inevitably going to end up in her mouth.

I just take any toys, maybe I'll get her something just for the pram. That snack container sounds like a good idea too, I'll see if I can find something that would work like that.

this was it! I was just thinking I need to think about putting some on his christmas list.

Ah cheers for finding them, they look good!

No, I wouldn't let my LO crawl around a cafe or somewhere like that. Its too dirty. Library maybe but not for too long.

I've let LO crawl around a cafe and a shopping centre, though it was very quiet, so no real danger from hot drinks etc. Ideally it would be great if she just sat in the buggy or a high chair (like I see most babies doing), but she's very active and will only tolerate the buggy for short periods at a time and only if we're moving (and she's not that into food either), so it's a choice between letting her explore or having her screaming and crying in her buggy. Or of course I could just never leave the house, but don't really fancy that either:shrug:.

I dont let her crawl around but i let her stand at my feet and walk round the table to Daddy.

No way, not here, if i seen someone doing that id wonder what on earth they were thinking? Public places are minging?!

Why would you wonder that? I guess thats what the woman was wondering when she gave Maria dirty looks but I don't understand why?

Just because public shops and things are generally filthy even if they do look clean. The public trod everything everywhere ykwim?

I do live in a city centre though, so if it was a very quiet lil place I cant imagine, I've never been in one!
