Do you think UKIP will win the election?

I will eat my own words if it happens, but I don't see it happening, I do think it's about time the other parties had to have a different approach and nothing is going to spur that on more than a new party on the scene.

I personally wouldn't be so worried. A lot of people are disillusioned with the EU and voting UKIP is a protest vote which represents that, rightly or wrongly, if you don't agree with the EU UKIP are the only party that probably feels like actually supports your own views, it's easy to vote on one issue.

If anything, it is a good thing it is a General Election next year because this is a damn good warning to the other parties, people WILL go out and vote if they are getting pissed off and there's an option that is much more realistic than the Green Party and BNP, too long the parties have been able blend in to a boring shade of grey, all being very similar in their actions, now they will have to fight to get people to vote for them.

That's just my opinion, no doubt people will disagree, but I'm personally not worried, I think it's all being a bit over played but hopefully that too will scare people to the polls, because I wonder how many of these people that complain about the idea of UKIP did actually go out and vote (not talking about people here).

I agree with everything you've just said

I don't think I agree, the protest votes were about so much more than the EU and if the public have lost trust in the Tories and labour then it's going to be very hard to get that back. UKIP have played on the other party's failings as 'a voice for the public' and unless they seriously up their game I think we'll see a very similar outcome.

We shall see, only the General Election will tell, a lot of people don't vote in these types of elections many times I've seen the media hype things up (BNP is a good example although not on the same scale) and it isn't what they project it to be, I think there's only so far we can use elections like this to guesstimate. As I say, I'm not worried, feel free to come back and quote me in a year's time if wrong ha.

The media has its own political agenda and I don't think they are reporting on UKIP so dramatically just to increase readership, I think they are deliberately stirring up the pot to get action from all sides.

When I was reading the local results the other day all the headlines were about UKIP, but when I looked at the stats to me the biggest news was the seats lost from the conservatives and gained by labour, but that was marginalised. I personally wouldn't be looking at MEP results to project the GE. But I profess to know very little on the subject, just my feelings.

I don't look at opinion polls this far ahead anyway because a year is a long time for things to change. Right now, as things stand, I think they're very serious contenders.

Let it be a lesson to those who protest by not voting at all.

In fairness I have learned my lesson in protest votes. The last ge was my first one I could vote in. I didn't feel Gordon brown deserved another term and I didn't like David Cameron at all, so I voted libdem. I feel so good about that!

Absolutely, it makes much more sense to vote tactically that not at all.

I really don't understand why people don't vote yet still moan about politics

Half my friends never voted but they all seem to have something to say :dohh::shrug:

What does this mean for Scotland and the independence vote? Do you think it will make more people vote yes?

I heard that 20k people voted for Britain first and 13k or something were from Scotland... I didn't even know you could vote for them:nope:

Too many people (especially the under 30's) don't vote at all. If you don't like any of the candidates and or are just totally undecided and are determined not to vote the best way to abstain is still to turn up but put a big cross on your ballot. Not turning up at all just means that you fall into the category of people politicians don't feel they need to please.

For financial reasons Britain First only had candidates in two or three places, Scotland being one so dont worry about how big a percentage of their votes were from Scotland.

Disclaimer: I am not a Britain First supporter but was reading up on them!

Found this blog on the media spin of the local elections interesting

What does this actually mean for our position within the EU now?

They can't change whether or not we're in the EU just by being in the EU parliament, which is good. But they have the most influence over EU policies and stuff.

Slightly related - Finland's equivalent of UKIP is the Finns' Party and I was just reading one of their new elected MEPs promises, this - "I have promised that should I be elected, I will cycle from Kilpisjärvi (Finland’s northwesternmost point) to Hetta in Enontekiö, northern Finland (a distance of nearly 175 kilometres) in early June." - how exactly is that a political promise?! Just as much of a joke as UKIP!

Voted SNP here and thankfully our council stayed SNP. I'm pretty disgusted at quite a few people I know who voted UKIP as a protest, and they were all women. Not one of them had read up on their policies but just didn't want a tory back in power :dohh:. Seriously you can't get more tory than UKIP !. And Britain 1st was just another protest vote from "Better Together" fans.

When I first read this I thought you said BNP :haha:
