Does it matter how many hours you work for tax credits?

Hi there

This is more to solve a debate I was having, my job involves on call duties which next week will mean I have no choice but to work 42 hours when I normally only do 25. I start a new job next month anyway and will be telling tax credits about an increase in wage so in the long run the extra money won't be a problem I'll probably have a slight overpayment but that's it.
But my colleagues are saying that I'm not allowed to work more than 25 hours coz that's what I've told tax credits, which I think is ridiculous, because surely they want us to work more? As long as I'm not earning massive amounts more than I say I am then surely it doesn't matter if I work more then 25 hours for just one week! I thought it was averaged anyway, coz some people don't always work the same hours every week. Some weeks I have worked less than 25 hours due to mine or children's sickness so it would average out around 25 anyway.

Am I right that tax credits won't penalise me for working more hours than I say I do? Surely it just matters what I earn not how many hours I work? I know that I have to work at least 16 a week to qualify for working tax credits as a single mum but i thought that was the only reason they asked!

Any thoughts?
