Dog won't eat

Need advice from knowledgable dog owners out there.

Our two Boston's were at DH's parents for a week while we were away. Since we got them back the male dog has not been eating. He's the nervous one of the two. The female, no issues. She's a pig. Problem is that his mother was free-feeding them kibble and lots of table scraps, from leftover roast and beef tips from the casino where she works to ravioli. So miss piggy gained weight of course and nervous Nellie stopped eating the food we had left for the dogs. On top of this, one of her own dogs is in heat and the nervous Boston was the only male dog there (thankfully he's fixed).

As far as I'm concerned, of we give it enough time and keep feeding the dogs at regular times, the male will eventually start eating again. Am I right or is there a better way to get him back on track? We feed them both the expensive prepared sausage rolls from Pet Smart twice a day and he seemed to like it fine before we left on vacation.

from my own experience & as a manager of a pet store we had alot of customers with this problem of their dog not eating...
one customer bought 8 different foods one time because the dog was fussy...

i would just do as you said & keep feeding what you have been at regular times.. he wont starve himself..
hes probably just nervous if hes had other dogs around..

does he get a chance to eat or does the female eat it if he isnt quick enough?

maybe feed them in seperate rooms or at seperate times for a while. xx

The female's a gem (although can get pretty darned stinky!). If she goes to the other bowl I just call to her and she comes right away.

I've figured part of the problem might be that one of SIL's dogs was in heat last week too.

I may have to wake up super early to take them for a walk before breakfast as opposed to when I get home from work. That might get his juices flowing.

The only way I was able to get my dog to start eating again was to try to seperate them when it's time to eat, for example putting some food in a seperate room specifically for the dog that wont eat. Also, try finding a wet food that they favor most, and using food as treats. When my dog wouldn't eat, I would tell him to sit and give him a piece of dog food as a treat, and keep having him do tricks, to wean her back into eating. And if he was still tough, it was still something in his stomach until he came around. If they continue not to eat, I would say it would be best to see the vet. Also keep an eye on his behavior. Lethargy in dogs is a very bad sign that they are just sick, depressed, or it could be a number of things.
