Don't think there is much hope (update: blighted ovum??)

Today, I wiped and saw bright red blood, but it then went away. I went the ER to get checked out. They did an ultrasound and saw a "fluid filled sac". They also did my HCG levels and they were 1988. They said that if my dates were accurate (which I know they are because I got a positive pregnancy test 3 weeks and 3 days ago and about 7 or 8 dpo - early I know), then my HCG should be between 5 and 10,000 and the baby should be visible. I estimate that I am currently 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant, so what they saw today doesn't sound promising. Does this sound like a blighted ovum?

It could be a blighted ovum, and levels that low three weeks after your initial bfp does sound bad. I'm so sorry hun :hugs:

it's way way way too early to tell. those hcg levels when baby should be visible are just numbers. every woman and every pregnancy are different.

and as far as sonography goes, it is really really early to tell anything now. seeing a baby depends on the equipment, experience of the sonographer and the position of the baby as well so i wouldn't just sign it off especially if the bleeding stopped.

i wish the best of luck to you and sending my prayers it's a sticky bean.

I agree that it's way too early to say. My LO started about being a suspected blighted ovum, as we saw only a sac on the first scan. Our next scan revealed a baby with a heartbeat. Perhaps they can repeat hcg/progesterone levels. Hang in there!

I had a scan at 5w6d and baby measured 6w2d and it was clearly visible with a hearbeat. (good sonographer but very old equipment) I would expect to see something at 6w3d. I agree that 3 weeks after a bfp I would expect hcg to be higher as well.

But really everyones experience is so differnt, I hope this works out for you. I'm sorry you're gong thru this.

I had a scan at 6+3 last time round and they couldn't see into the sac. I'd had a miscarriage previously so this really freaked me out. They then took me down to the maternity unit and scanned me there and the sonographer found a heartbeat. Don't worry too much yet - I had bleeding too with my last pregnancy (hence the early scan). It is possible it's a blighted ovum but I think you need to go back in a week and get them to do another scan.

Well, I've had no more bleeding today. I got more details on what the ultrasound revealed yesterday. There is a sac in my uterus with nothing visible in it. Doctor says that I'm either a lot earlier than I thought (which isn't possible with BFP over 3 weeks ago) or it is possibly a "pseudosac" which could indicate there is an ectopic pregnancy, even though they didn't see anything in my tubes yesterday on ultrasound. I've had no pain at all. Still have symptoms. It's just a waiting game. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?

hang in there jbeard, I know it's hard to not be positive, but those things sound like good signs, no further bleeding, no pain, and still symptoms. I read that with an ectopic you have extreme pain. I'm pulling for you.

i agree with the pp, it can as well be that the baby is just positioned so that they can't see it. there was a woman in mc forum who posted about a misdiagnosed blighted ovum; her baby was positioned so that the US couldn't see it, the docs (her colleagues as she was a nurse!!) told her it's a blighted ovum, but she felt everything was ok and kept feeling pregnant and a few days later picked the heartbeat up alone in the hospital. i think she had a tilted uterus which made the scanning harder, and if i remember well she was around 8 weeks so...

it is still really too early to tell, imho. keeping my fingers crossed for you! so sorry you have to go through the waiting game.

Thank you, ladies. A tiny bit of brown bleeding today. Trying to stay hopeful, but I know the chances of a good outcome are low. If pregnancy is ectopic, I just want to know so it can treated without me losing a tube. Hoping to know more today, but we will see.

Being in limbo is awful, I hope you get unexpected good news but either way I hope you get answers soon. I agree with what other girls have said, although it doesn't look good it's too early to be sure. Hugs.

Well, here's the latest. My HCG today was a little over 2400. So in 48 hours, HCG only rose from 1988 to a a little over 2400. I had another US today and now they are confirming that I in fact do have a "gestational sac" and that it is not a "psuedosac". They did not find an ectopic pregnancy that they could see in my tubes or ovaries. I have to return Monday for more bloodwork and another scan. I just don't feel very hopeful. The size of the sac was somewhere in the 6 week range. I'm currently supposed to be 6+5, but there was no fetal pole present. I think it's sounding more and more like a blighted ovum. Is there any chance that I just have a sluggish baby that might catch up?? It just seems like HCG is just way too low.

It does seem like things should be moving faster. I have read simmilar storries with a good outcome so there is still hope. At least things are progressing. Now it's just a case of waiting. Waiting is horrid! Hugs

i second the pp, it does sound like it should go faster but it is not done for sure and at least they are clear now on the ectopic issue and a real sac and not a "pseudosac". it is already evolving a bit from their first (and quite sloppy) analysis. i keep my fingers crossed that your baby catches up!

I don't know if this helps at all but i had exactly this with my last pregnancy lowish hcg levels nothing visible in the sac spotting etc. they did several scans and bloodwork every two days til at 7 weeks he appeared clear as day , he's now 14 months old they may just not be able to see anything just yet, hope it works out!
