A couple of days ago I thought I had been bitten on my leg, just by knee. I woke yesterday with another "bite mark" just at the back of knee. Both marks are now very red, swollen, hard and warm also extremely itchy.
Some of my friends tell me it could be DVT.
If you have suffered could you tell me how it looked? Felt? And what I should do?

If you think you have DVT please go straight to hospital / GP - honestly my friend had one post pregnancy and nearly died. Please don't wait for we (unqualified) folk to speculate on here for you. They come in all shapes and sizes. Call 111 or go to a walk in clinic - honestly you can't mess with them - if it goes to your lungs or brain it's really not good...
xx

I was sure it was just a bite until some friends said it could be DVT so now I'm starting to worry. I can't see my GP as it's to late. I'm at the hospital in the morning for a consultant appointment so I will talk to them about it.

Thank you x

I am a registered nurse and DOES are not something to mess around with. I would suggest going in to the hospital right away and having them take a look. Keep us posted :)

Hun - read this:

https://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Deep-vein-thrombosis/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

Main symptoms:

pain, swelling and tenderness in one of your legs (usually your calf)
a heavy ache in the affected area
warm skin in the area of the clot
redness of your skin, particularly at the back of your leg below the knee

Please get yourself checked out tonight. I'm not trying to scare you - just better safe than sorry xx

I suffered with DVT in one of my pgs. The only reason I knew something wasn't right, was because my right leg kept giving way on me most of the time. I put it down to pregnancy twinges for nearly 2 weeks until one evening I was sat on the floor sorting Xmas things out and when I tried to get up my leg and foot froze up and I fell onto the floor in sheer agony. It took ages for it to give up and felt like the worst cramp you can never imagen. I knew then that I needed to get it checked out and rang mw straight away. The doctors measured my leg and found no swelling or redness, so I think the assumed it was nothing, but got me on blood thinning injections straight away as a precaution. The next day I was sent for an ultrasound scan which confirmed a blood clot. I had gone two weeks unaware of this and it still scares me.

Now in my pregnancies I'm automatically put on daily blood thinning injections from about 12 weeks until 6 weeks after delivery. This is a precaution. They give me peace of mind now.

I would get it checked either way hun, it's a serious situation and I would call your mw today or go to a&e. Fingers crossed it's just a nasty bite in which case they will put your mind at ease.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on xxxxx

I agree with everyone else. DVT's are definitely not something you want to mess around with. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't wait until morning and go to the hospital immediately to have it checked out.

I had an undiagnosed dvt in my last pregnancy. It was finally diagnosed 2 weeks after giving birth when it broke off and went into my lungs. Very very scary life threatening situation. Do not take any chances, get it looked at.

Personally I think you should go to rule out cellulitis. It's a skin infection which can be very dangerous. At 16wks I was sent to a&e as I had similar symptoms to you, however my patch was purple from swollen veins behind a spider veins. The fact you have bite marks makes an infection very likely. A&E did a blood test as soon as I got there to rule it out, then carried out some tests to rule DVT out too. Luckily mine turned out to be neither of those things, but I now wear support tights daily and sleep with my legs raised. The skin is tight and itchy and my leg looks horrid. With a bit of luck yours is just an allergic reaction to whatever's bitten you, but you need to go and get it checked out ASAP.

Also I would say don't wait til the morning. The work nurse who saw me wanted me to go to hospital immediately. I wasn't allowed to wait until the morning.

Hi ladies thank you all got you replies. I went to care centre in the local pharmacy, they looked at it and said it was a bite that had got infected but I can't take anything for it. They gave me some calamine lotion to sooth the itching. They said I'll be ok till the morning when I see the doctor. Apparently I'd be in a lot of pain if it was DVT, I'm trying to keep it elevated and not walk on it to much. I'll get it seen first thing in the morning though.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again

Shown the consultant my leg today, they sent me for a ultrasound scan. All is well with my veins so looks like it's just an infected bite. They just told me to keep the area clean x

That's a relief. At least they checked it out for you Hun. I've got a few bites at the minute and I bought this pen stuff from boots yesterday called 'after bite' You can use it when pg and I found it helped the itching. Xx

Blot clots run in my family- I have had a few- doctors dismissive me I could have died- finally at a high risk place I was put on blood thinkers- It's very scary how many doctors out there dont do their job-
red hot swollen is the markers for a blood clot but you don't always get that!!! my nephew has had a few blood clots- the last one only felt like he pulled something in his leg- didnt think anything of it cause it didnt swell or get red or hot- three days later he was buckled over vomiting blood and rushed to the ER- it was a clot and it traveled to his lugs- almost killed him- He was lucky - sometimes they are silent and just kill you- Do not mess around with it- If I sit too long ( and thats not very long) in a chair (like a kitchen chair) I will clot behind my knees-

****
the first thing they should do is an ultra sound on your leg- they squeeze your leg and can watch the blood flow on the screen- Last time I went to ER for a blood clot they refused to do the U/S and tried to go right to cat scan- no good for baby- I refused and had to check myself out- doc was an ass- went to high risk hospital and they said I was 100% right- did the U/S and put me on safe thinners-

I'm glad to hear you're okay. I am absolutely terrified of having a DVT...like, I'm getting really anxious about it. I have poor circulation in my legs (and even though I'm active and not overweight, a few ugly veins that have sadly gotten bulgy since getting pregnant...thanks genetics!!!) and I'm flying long haul at 19 weeks (4 flights in a row, 21 hours of flying with short stops in between...27 total hours of travel). I am honestly so petrified of getting one. I know all the precautions...drink lots of water, wear compression stockings, walk around as much as possible and stretch legs. But I can't stop thinking about how both flying and pregnancy increase your risk of DVT...combine that with my already shoddy legs, and I'm a nervous wreck :( I know a man who was flying long haul (mind you, he was a bit elderly which doesn't help with DVT) and he stood up to disembark from the plane, and the poor man just died on the spot...he had developed a DVT on the flight and it traveled to some vital part. I have that story in my head a lot these days, but I'm trying not to worry myself too much....lol, it's. It working!

That would terrify me to huni. You sound like you no what to do though, wear the docks move around as much as possible, drink plenty. Try not to stress it otherwise baby will stress too. All will fine I'm sure, try and enjoy the journey even though flying is awful and boring especially off that length of time. Xxx
