A friend of mine keeps sharing EDL rubbish and a few hours ago posted this. How would you interpret it?

'This is a screen shot from a video of a muslim protest in london. This extremist sign as you can see says islam will dominate the world. Religion is about faith and choice. Any religion that tries to 'dominate' the world, is no religion, it is a cult. This parasitic cult needs to be recognised and extradited before we become victims in out own country'
It was accompanied by a photo of someone holding a sign saying 'Islam will dominate the world!'

I commented straight away saying 'People like that are in the minority and you should know better than to judge a whole religion because of them.' and I have been completely jumped on for it. He told me that I am uneducated etc and that I should have read previous posts to know the context of what he said and that he wasn't being ignorant and racist.

His previous post was this 'Another example of the so called religion of peace. Woman raped yet faces a public caining. Scum. Burn them'

Someone replied with 'Animals.... he who has no sin cast the first stone, they all have done wrong for goodness sake ....This religion needs to be stopped its so full of hatred... ... Thank God for Jesus I say, forgiveness is his message..'

and he said 'It is more a cult than a religion i think' and I called him on that too.

I'm seeing more and more of this sort of attitude everywhere and I'm honestly beginning to question my own sanity because I'm apparently the only one who is totally disgusted by it? I don't know if I'm totally misunderstanding something or if attitudes these days are just going that way  I think it's so sad.

My news feed today is full of the halal meat being used in British supermarkets without being labeled as halal ... I've not seen any hate comments, just that this is wrong which I completely agree with

I've seen a couple of racist comments but I tend to just delete these people

Maybe u need a clear out of friends :)

I'm thinking that too! It's just such an ugly side to people and I'm really gutted that this particular friend is like that.

Although I must add that the big name currently talking about using Halal meat is Pizza Express and the animals are stunned beforehand (in accordance with UK regulations, the same way as the non-halal meat). The only difference is the prayer that goes with it so, unless I'm missing something, I think the current uproar about it is a bit pointless.

Yes these posts really annoy me too, they only serve to stir up race hate, and people seem to fall for it every time judging by the responses :(

I have got myself involved in a few Facebook comments 'debates' over stuff like this, when I just feel like I can't or shouldn't keep quiet.

I have a couple of friends who consistently posts fake stories obviously made up to stir up hatred. Despite having it pointed out several times and it only taking a quick Google to check the facts they continues to do this.

I also had a friend post about some Subway stores switching to halal and was about to get involved as there was some horribly racist comments underneath, but one of her muslim friends beat me to it and set them straight :haha:

I spent 10 years in the Navy, much of that as a Farsi linguist deployed in the Middle East. In addition, I have spent the past two years as a civilian working as an intelligence analyst for a government agency, specializing in the Afghanistan and Iraq missions. I have seen more atrocious acts than I care to admit, however I have also had the privilege of working with Iraqi, Iranian, and Afghani natives who are some of the best people I have ever met. The teachings of Islam, like any religion, is interpreted in a variety of ways depending on the individual. Although there have been horrible acts committed in the name of the religion (again, like MANY religions), I would venture to say that those who make blanket statements like the ones you quoted do so out of ignorance. I'm guessing those individuals haven't had much exposure to a variety of Muslims.

Tell your 'friend' he's a fucking hypocrite. Implying that Islam cannot be a religion of peace because a very small minority interpret it differently... Well I bet he'd also say that the UK is a country of relative equality and justice and that British people (or white British, at least) are civilised. Then there's him, the minority, going against it all and publicly proclaiming for the burning of religious followers. Not only is his suggestion of torture exclaiming a sentiment just as bad as those expressed by Islamist groups (though luckily he is likely living too cushy a life to ever act on his hatred, and that is the difference), he is also proving with his own dumb threats and ideas that the minority- him- by no means reflect the majority. Oh, and then you should unfriend him, because no one needs racist idiots in their life, apart from other racist idiots.

I don't get the issue with eating halal meat when you're not a Muslim? It doesn't bother me at all. A dead animal is a dead animal and 90% of meat eaters don't truly care about/check whether the animals are killed humanely or live reasonable lives.

I don't think I've ever been so mad at something I've seen on fb, it rapidly got out of hand and turned into the 2 of us arguing over email. The level of ignorance truly astounded me, and I think it got me more because never in a million years did I expect it from him.
One of his later responses was 'Perhaps if you are going to make an opinion then you should read up further and research more. Making a comment on a subject and post which clearly you havent looked into far enough is ignorant in itself. And i have yet to post any 'bullshit' just facts, which unfortunately a minority such as yourself choose to ignore and instead try to make a half effort unfounded argument about how they shouldnt be tarred with the same brush etc which isnt the case anyway.' Well, at this point I wanted to punch him in the face. After a while it became clear that no matter what I said he was going to tell me I was uneducated and there are only so many different ways I can word the exact same thing before it turned into 'you are ignorant and racist'.

After I posted it here I felt a bit daft but I swear my blood was literally boiling and I wanted to vent! Your comments have restored some of my faith in humanity after encountering some of the idiots I found myself speaking to. I was baffled by the whole situation tbh!!

I totally agree with the above about halal meat regarding most meat eaters. But like I said before - in the UK there are guidelines that are adhered to regardless of how the animal is actually killed in the end so what difference does it really make? It's just another way for racist people to be racist. Funnily enough that crap was posted by him shortly after I'd finished having a go at him :dohh:

No hun it boils my blood too. I can't ever keep quiet when people are racist, and it's usually on FB. And I like how he says you know nothing and should shut up, does he have a religious studies masters degree or something? I bet he knows nothing about Islam at all, bar what he may have learnt in year 5 :dohh:

He just thinks he knows everything and won't be told otherwise. Such an irritating trait lol. You're right though, he's probably just applying primary school knowledge to it. Rather than actually reply to what I was saying he kept telling me I hadn't done my research etc so I don't think he had a clue what he was talking about :haha:

Urgh I hate those racists, luckily I don't seem to have many on my facebook, or at least they don't appear on my facebook feed much.

I just unfriend people like that. You can try to reason with them but they're so hate-filled that they are incapable of reason. Much better to spend your time doing something fun! If you want to talk to him about it, perhaps suggest that when he has read the Qur'an and can back what he says with references rather than links/photos to other reference-free crap, you'll be happy to discuss his ideas.

Most halal meat in the UK is stunned (it's about 10% of all halal in the UK that isn't stunned, I think). I do try to buy halal when I can but only if it's from the authorities that allow stunning. It's a daft argument that meat shouldn't be stunned anyway!

What is the difference between stunning not stunning is it a welfare thing to prevent suffering or is there another reason? I dont mind halal meat persinally I think its kinda nice that they pray for the animals.

Yeah it prevents suffering, they're unconscious before being slaughtered and there are a few ways of doing it. Aslong as that happens I don't think how they're slaughtered makes any difference. People seem to be getting funny about it either because they think that none of the animals are stunned beforehand or they're just ignorant morons who clearly think that saying a little prayer as part of a ritual changes the way the meat tastes.

How disgusting. I personally would just delete and block him, and any other small minded individuals that jumped on your comments.

As for the halal thing, I am a meat eater but a very big animal lover, but I have no qualms with eating halal as long as the animal has been slaughtered humanely first. Prayer or not, but I would refuse to eat something that had just had it's throat slit, even if some person read the poor thing a prayer during it's kill. I am a little sad that subway won't be using bacon anymore though. I find that a bit crazy, and will only add fuel to the fire to all of the bigots and xenophobics out there.

I think it's because there is some huge fear amongst Daily Mail readers that the UK is slowly becoming an Islamic state :dohh:

It's only a relatively small number of Subway stores that are replacing bacon, they are just responding to their local market.

Yup! Total ignorance.
