Extended breastfeeders!

Didn't know whether to put this in the BnB Group section or not!

12 months is quickly approaching us. I had a lovely chat with my younger sister earlier about how she admires me for breastfeeding so long and that I shouldn't stop before she's 2! Didn't know anyone around me thought it was alright.

Anywho, I think when we get to a point (6 months plus) it gets a little uncomfortable in public, we face some things that will knock us a bit, and we need some support from others to keep going and keep fighting for our right to breast feed for as long as suits us!

Only an idea, but I know I need some boobie cheerleading quite often these days! Thought we could encourage and support eachother?!

I am soooo very excited to be hitting the 12 month mark next week! It has been amazing to be able to feed him. It has had its ups and downs, but overall it has just been the most wonderful part of my day and being a mother.

I'm not even remotely embarassed about feeding in public. In fact I am really proud to.

I don't mind so much in a Cafe, or somewhere I can sit out of the way, but I don't think I could whack them out just anywhere

YEP!

Definately but Toria that's not to say EVERYONE who doesnt isnt proud etc. It's just me - it's who I am. Seriously, if you knew me in RL you'd expect nothing less! I am very very comfortable with 'me' and am ready for anyone, anywhere to criticise me. I'm not one to kick off particularly but I am usually not lost for words and have a come back to most things that are thrown at me.

I dont 'whack' them out anywhere! I'm proud to be a BFer but I'm discreet too. It wont stop me going anywhere or doing anything.

Soooo I think I make a good cheerleader for those reasons and if you will accept me into your troup I will be a loyal and steadfast member!!

I still nursed Hayden past a year in public, and I was too really proud of it He only nursed in public until like 15mo because then he ct back to just before bed and in the mornings so we weren't out at that time, but I would have continued. He just self weaned at 19mo So I guess I can't be a real member of this group anymore lol

Im embarrassed to feed Ellie now in public! I have fed her in costas a few times but i always feel looked at. I am discreet but still think anyone looking would know what im doing. Cus of how society is it makes me feel like im doing something naughty! It really pisses me off.

Sorry to just jump into this thread with no experience bf, but I am really surprised to hear that people get off looks for bf at 6 months???? Most people I know bf for 6months-1 year normally. When I saw the thread "extended breastfeeders" I was assuming 1-2+years LOL. I am hoping to (eventually-fingers crossed!!!) bf for 1yr and maybe continue 1x/day before bed for a little longer Hopefully I can join you all someday soon

Good luck!!!! I also think of extended breastfeeding going past age 1. But even with the current recommendations, exclusive breastfeeding until 6mo then starting solids but continuing until 12mo, the WHO recommends 2yrs and the world average is actually 4yr...some people still think its "disturbing" or something and gie dirty looks whether it's a newborn or 1yr old...I don't get it, completely natural, best thing for baby, but some people just aren't educated on it

Sun & MO3. Extended BFing IS past the age of 1 but unfortunately in the UK to get to 6 weeks is rare - we have a shocking uptake here. Overall, only 35 per cent of UK babies are being exclusively breastfed at one week, 21 per cent at six weeks, 7 per cent at four months and 3 per cent at five months.

I think people from other countries are quite suprised.

I'm glad that because I breast feed my neices, nephew and younger sister think it's a good thing and "the norm" so to speak.
