Sorry to sneak over from 2nd tri but i have a quick question for all you breastfeeding ladies!

I am planning to breastfeed and have been looking at what feeding/support cushions are available to buy and was wondering what everyone would recommend?

Are some better than others or are they all mostly the same? Do any of you get by without using one but just using ordinary pillows/cushions?

Thanks!

I preferred normal pillows to start with even though I had a V pillow. Even if you dont use it right away or ever for BFing, they make a great little prop/nest for tiny babies! :D

I had a cushion from my sister, one of the round ones that go round your middle but I can't say I found it very helpful. It was rather hard and didn't seem to be at the right height. I found normal pillows better as they could be arranged for side on feeding or the normal cradle holds and built up to whatever height I needed. I did use the BF pillow for lumber support for a while though!

I tried to get by without one, but I found that I was really hunching over to feed Simon and that my back was starting to hurt. I would stack regular pillows to try to lift him up, but it didn't stay in place very well. The U-shaped nursing pillow stayed in place better, and the one I bought (The Nursing Buddy or something like that) was fairly thick, so it really lifted Simon up to me.
I have used it as a nursing pillow and as a baby prop and it's Simon's favourite place to nap. It was a good buy for me. I have heard many women say they wouldn't bother, though. Here they are about $60 CAD, so it's a bit to spend if you aren't sure you'll use it. See if you can borrow one first and then decide, maybe?

I have a cushion called a Boppy, not sure if you can get them in the UK, it was a present from America. I've found it to be really good. Wraps around your waist and is very soft. I would still need to put a small cushion under the bit where LO's head is to get her up to the right height but then again she's a long baby and I'm long in the body so that could just be us! I'd definitely recommend it.

i used a widgey breastfeeding cushion which was great for the first month or so as i was finding it difficult to position Oliver. As soon as we got the hang of bf i didnt need it though. hope this helps

We have a widgey and I love it, so easy to use, but only when sat up on the settee, I find it slips if I'm sat up in bed, but when in bed I feed laying down anyway so it doesn't really matter.

I have this cushion and I love it

I use it for feeding and now as a support to help LO sit up. It went on holiday with us too.

They are super handy whether you FF or BF... They dont stay tiny for long and I know even my arm would be dying from her weight when I was FF...

Plus like the others said its great for tiny babies having naps, or practicing sitting up for older babies.... And now Jasmine just crawls around and over it haha... great obstacle for her.

I have a v-pillow. It was very useful during pregnancy when I would wedge it between my legs and under my bump in bed! But it's been utterly invaluable for BFing, which is why I originally got it. I find it quite tricky to BF without it when out and about. And Jack loves napping nestled in it too! When he falls asleep nursing I just move him and the pillow together very slowly onto the bed and leave him to sleep like that lol :cloud9:

I have a v-pillow too, got it cheap off eBay (to be honest you can tell, its ripped and the stuffing comes out but I bought a case for it and just bang the lot in the washing machine lol!) I got the v one because thats what they used in hospital lol no other reason, it's only the past week we've started using it, my DD's getting a bit heavy and she loves falling asleep on boobie and having a snuggle so it holds her weight for me.

Awww Shifter he's gorgeous! He's got so much hair!

hiya,

i have been using this since the last weeks of my pregnancy. https://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/...gId=-1&searchTerms=nursing+pillow&Submit=GO+>

its great to sleep on and nurse on as well and not so pricey.

I made my own from a pattern online https://sewityourself.googlepages.com/
I have to say its identicle to the boppy type of pillow and I stuffed it with 2 flat bedroom pillows that I pulled apart, then made a cover for it, I couldn't do with out it I had a c section so really need the padding across my lap, I have seen an inflatable one in boots for about 10 pounds if you need a cheap option but don't want to make one.

We do this, too!
It's been great for helping to keep him from rolling over and waking himslef these last few nights, too.

Thanks for all the replies, it's much appreciated

I have now added one to our online wish list and just last night OH's mum was asking what we have on there so perhaps i'll be the proud owner of a feeding cushion sooner than i thought! I guess i can always use it for support for me in the meantime, like a few people have suggested.

Thanks again ladies.

P.S. Love the photos shifter, he's just scrummy!
