Fibroids....

today i went in for some very light spotting, during my ultrasound they told be i had fibriods on my uterus. It was just a triage appt so i didn't get very much information and my next appt isn't til feb 14th. Does anyone here have personal exspierence?!! i did some reading and of coarse its freaking me out.

I just got diagnosed with them this afternoon (had some light brown spotting when I wiped and cramping and so got an ultrasound at the ER). The ER doctor didn't have much information for me either. I have a midwife appointment on Monday so I'll ask her then. From what I've read 30% of women have them, and most go on to have healthy pregnancies. I'll let you know what my midwife says about it on Monday though. Try not to worry (I know, easier said than done!)

I have fibroids - I have two on the uterine wall measuring about 3-4 cm each. I knew they were there before I fell pregnant as they showed up on a scan I'd had previously. I was worried and have spoken to doctors and consultants to re-assure me. Essentially I was told that sometimes they cause a problem when trying to conceive but once you are pregnant they don't cause any issue at all. Occassionally they may cause a small bleed or they may ache when the uterus stretches. If you have heard anything different, I'd love to hear. Hope everything is going well for you both.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear that they shouldn't cause a problem with the pregnancy! I will let you know what the midwife says this afternoon.

not yet, i found out friday so i had to wait through the weekend. I am making a call here in a min and hopefully will be able to gain a lil more info.

@MrsF123- the only info i have gathered is via Google. Some sites say it nothing of concern others will scare ya.

So the midwife said they only cause a problem if they are big and low down (this may interfere with delivery). Also, depending on size and location there is a slight chance of haemorrhaging during delivery. She couldn't say anything about mine in particular since she didn't have the scan. Once she gets it she will let me know more. My doctor is also supposed to call me back after she takes a look at the scan. So I guess for now it's just a waiting game.

I have fibroids. They can sometimes grow because of the hormones that are produced during pregnancy. Last time my largest one got to 20cms!! I was in for regular scans and was told that baby could come early, be small, and I could hemmorage afterwards but none of this happened. This time it has only grown to 8cms across and I'm considered perfectly healthy and normal and am even having a homebirth this time.
They only tend to cause problems when they are down low across the cervix (for obvious reasons) or if they get really big, although mine did last time and caused no problems at all.

kiwimama & laughingduck : thank you for the info. sounded so scary hearing "tumors" were on my uterus. Hope these darn fibroids of ours stay quiet and cause no problems. Hope my info is just a good as yall and mine are also of no concern.

Did you ever have symptoms of fibroids before you found out? I always thought I had endometriosis because I would cramp from the day I ovulated to when I got my period. I read that cutting out dairy products can help with the symptoms so stopped eating them last September. Within one cycle the cramps had stopped. I also just did some reading on fibroids and apparently they are also linked to dairy intake. Interestingly enough, on Friday I broke down and had a grilled cheese sandwich (first dairy in months). Then started spotting a few hours later. It seems like it could be stretching it to link the two, but I have to wonder...

I didn't know until I had my first (unsuccessful) pregnany several years ago, but nothing was done about them at all. I had very heavy periods when I was a teenager but have been on hormone contraceptions or pregnant since then and not had much problem with my periods.
I think I read during my last pregnancy that they are more prevalent in black women than white women (I am white) but nothing about the dairy link.

Well I got the report back and there is only one fibroid and it's less than 1cm big, so nothing to worry about! She did say there was texture in other areas, so it could be the start of more, but I think as long as I keep off the dairy I'll be fine. I know it helped with the cramping before I knew I had fibroids, so I'm guessing with me there is a definite connection. I was vegetarian from age 8-23 (now 29) and ate loads of cheese and dairy to make up for the lack of meat, so this may have contributed to it a bit... Do a quick google search on fibroids and dairy and you'll find quite a bit linking the two.

hiya hun, try not to worry about them once ur preg they really dont cause an issue unless big or low down like said above, i have 3 of them and all are up high and 3-4cm in size, i didnt know i had them until my 12 week scan with this baby as id never had symptoms of them in the past so was very shocked like urself as id never personally heard of them b4, i was told not to worry about them as there very small and shouldnt pose a prob...well as u can imagine the word shouldnt wasnt good enough for me to relax so i googled them (big mistake) and read lots of scary stuff, i voiced my concerns to my doc at next app i had at the hosp and he said to really not even think about them and they will be checked again at 20 week scan, they were checked again and hadnt grown at all which was great so now there not going to be checked again and if cause my probs with periods after babys birth then i can have them removed but i never had probs b4 so i doubt they will cause probs for me ever, got admit i hadnt even thought about them since my 20 week scan until reading this post try not to worry hun ur one is VERY small and theres only 1 so that should be of more comfort to you xxxx

Hello! I just came across your thread and thought that I would give you my experience!

I recently had a little boy (September 2010), when I first fell pregnant with him I was bleeding on/off quite a bit! it was really scary i had a few early scans before my scheduled 12 week and they stated I had 3 fibroids they wernt particulary big however they had caused me alot of problems my periods where excrutiating because of them. I was very aware of this condition due to my mum she had it previously and had them removed before she had me. Anyway during my pregnancy I saw a consultant whom kept an eye on my fibroids making sure they didnt grow especially as one was quite low and potentially could block the birth canal..thankfully it didnt

My scans showed that they were getting smaller and the baby was thriving the only precaution taken during labour was to put me on a special drip to cause my womb to shrink quicker, i have forgotten what its called but will look up. This drip was to help with blood loss, unfortunetly I lost alot of blood (a litre) The Dr where considering transfusion however my blood levels started to go up. Thankfully me and the baby where fine! once the Drs know that you have fibroids they will look after you! so dont worry they are harmless growths and most times they shrink because they cannot compete with little bubba!!

I have fibroids and usually they are not any kind of issue as stated previously. Sometimes they can grow rapidly due to the hormones, as mine have, and outgrow their blood supply. This can cause what is called "degeneration" it can be painful but isn't a common occurance. Mine are somewhat low but are in the muscle wall of the uterus so shouldn't interfere with the growth or birth of the baby.
