First OPK test...Confused

Hoping you guys explain this to a newbie.

I'm 36...TTC #1. Stopped BCP last month. Just ending first cycle. AF came as scheduled. Shorter and lighter than normal...but first after stopping BCP.
Today is CD4 so I thought I'd start learning how to test my OPK.

So, just did my first one...seems darker than I expected. Is it cause my body is still adjusting after BCP or did I do it wrong or will they gradually get darker?

Think it needs to be as dark or darker than control line to be 'positive'. Keep testing!
