Food for after delivery?

They will give u tea and toast straight away and it will be the best tea and toast of your life! I bought so much food to hospital with me and couldn't eat any of it.

I wasn't allowed to eat anything during labour, I could have water but that was it. But I was given Tea & Toast after delivery, my god it was the best tea & toast known to man!

I went home the next day and had a fat chinese LOL

after delivery I had toast and a can of full fat coke and some sugary tea then some melon and grapes :)

I was allowed to eat but didn't want to eat or drink at all. Just laid there lol

So I'm expecting my first but thought that would ask you all in here for some suggestions since have gone through it already and probably fairly recently as well.

Unfortunately my doctor is one who does not allow any food whatsoever during labor and delivery. All I can have are ice cubes and they plan on giving me a glucose drip because I am hypoglycemic (sp?). Which really sucks cause I'm someone who HAS to eat something every couple of hours or else results in me passing out. But anyways. Because of this I was planning on bringing some snacks along with me so that as soon as have that baby can hopefully start eating something before who knows when would bring actual meal up to me to eat.

Any suggestions of what would be good to bring? I figure probably want something on the lighter side but have no idea what would be in mood to even eat at that point or if anything imparticular would bother stomach at all. Are crackers a good thing to bring? What do you all suggest?

I was exactly like you! I didn't believe I coul go without food because during the day I have to eat often, or else I get all shaky. Turns out I managed 1 slice of toast at home at about 7am when contractions started at 10pm the night before. After that I didn't have anything until a few hours after Sophie was born (7.30pm). I didn;t even think of food! At around 11pm I had a sandwich and then started eating normal in the morning again!

I never got tea and toast . I had to ask several times for some food water before I got something as I was stuck in bed after a c-section!

My first labour I didn't get to eat for 2 whole days, last time it was 1.5days. With ds I had the best jacket spud with cheese on after mmm. This time I had a cheese sandwich, then 2 slices of toast and several cups of tea lol. All the BEST food in the world! Of course not *the* best, but when you're SO hungry and tired it seems like nothing can beat it haha. XX

the hospital made me toast after she was born and i had the smallest nibble and just didnt want it, i didnt/couldnt eat properly with both of them for around 1-2 x

I was starving once DS was born and once he went off to the nursery, my mum arrived with traditional Indian post-labour food (high calories, fat and vitamins). I gobbled it down!

Do you know if your chosen hospital has good food? Mine was awful and was really glad to have my mum prepare and bring me meals for the three days I was there after delivery.

i wasnt allowed to eat during labour as i had a epidural but afetr the birth i was starved and ate a full box of cereal bars down in one haha oh and 4 bottles of isotonic drink and copious amounts of tea

Dates are the best thing you can eat, the sugar is available immediately as it breaks dfown quickly and gives you that energy boost :) Also warming and healing foods are best after birth or soon after if possible. Foods like chicken soups (put a good amount of tumeric in it, it helps speed up the healing process), meat/ chicken dishes which are warming for the body. Also drinks ideally will be room temperature or slightly warm ie: warm water/ warm juice.

I could eat during labour but anything I had just came back, even water!

I was so hungry when I had given birth the MW brought me toast, best thing ever.

I had a banana and some cereal bars in my bag too which were great as I had LO at 8.30 pm and there was no where to get any food and by the time i got on ward it was 11.30pm so I was grateful I had something in my bag!

I would have loved sweets or chocolate, you know, something with sugar after going 16 hours without food, so if I was to have another I would take sweets and fruit and cereal bars......

I didn't eat for 38 hours (start of labour until after stitches) and I was STARVING!! I would have eaten anything! I haven't read all the posts some this may have been said already - don't just take one cereal bar etc - take a box! I took cereal bars, chewits, crisps and lucozade. The only thing I think I would have liked that I didn't have is something for OH to eat. The midwife kept asking if he was ok and he constantly told her he was a little hungry so she wandered off looking for a sandwich for him!!!! I kinda needed her!!!! :dohh:

Luckily we had a student midwife too so at least I had someone with an idea of what I should be doing.
