Gas & Air- USA

I dunno... it might annoy me! I know I had it once during a root canal, and finally just asked him to turn it off, because all it did was *literally* make me giggle...so there I was trying to be serious and hold still, and all the while feeling all the nervousness and fear but holding back laughter at the same time! It drove me NUTS!
Same with, I think Demerol... an IV pain med they can give you during labor... I got so irritated with it because I was still feeling all the pain but couldn't keep myself from falling asleep between contractions due to the meds! So I'd fight sleep, then get jerked awake by a contraction and be TICKED...then fight sleep.... etc... LOL.

Nitrous is great! I've been known to pull my chapstick out of my pocket and turn it over in my hands, staring at it as if it were the most fascinating thing ever.

i had gas and air (entonox) with my son and will be having it delivered to my house in aweek for my homebirth :) i dont know what id do without it, it just takes the edge of the pain, and it wears off within secs! you literally have to keep deeply breathing it in to get an effect but well worth it, it can make many people sick though from friends ive spoke to as i does make you alittle dizzy and out of it!
all the better i say lol!!
Defiantly a shame that every country doesnt have it.

How do you find the c section rate for your hospital? Is there a website that lists this?

I asked during my hospital tour...but I would imagine you can get the rates somewhere online.

I'm having a homebirth but the MW brings the G&A, how come yours in getting delivered early? I;ve been told i may not get a MW as they are short staffed so if there is a way to order it separately!

They say the whole you might not get a midwife thing to try to scare you into hospital, where it is easier for them, as long as you have told them that a homebirth is what you want and it is in your notes then they have to send either a midwife from the hospital or a midwife on call to your home. xx

no idea:hugs: thats rather annoying for you, im having 2 bottles delivered and each midwife (im having 2 and a student) will bring a bottle in their car.
you should really have 2 midwives also. 37 weeks is full term so not early really as labour could start from 37weeks, but they wont deliver it anytime before that because obviously a HB would be out of the question, as being classed as premature.

i think it depends on how well staffed for midwives in your area is, luckily we have plenty in my area, also it depends on how they feel about homebirths, some hospitals/midwives just would rather not. luckily again where i live they are fully 100% supportive and rather excited with me to be having a HB as now many women do it these days :)

i suppose it does depend on the area, i just read about it a few weeks ago when trying to see how hard it would be to fight to have a homebirth and that excuse was on the list of reasons they give to get you to come in but it just said they had a duty of care towards you and had to supply a midwife or equivalent to your home when you needed it.
hope you get the homebirth you want :) fingers crossed!!

You Csection rate is much much higher in many hospital than ours nationally 24% opposed to 60+% i think (correct me if wrong!) - i would say your limited mild/moderate pain relief choices have a lot to do with it. It's so very unfair yeah :(

Wow, I just read the national c-section rate is 30%. 60%?:dohh: I'm sure that's not right. Just found this: In December 2010, the National Center for Health Statistics released the preliminary U.S. national cesarean rate for 2009: 32.9%.

US ladies, there is an article in FitPregnancy this month about gas & air. They are planning to make it available in more US hospitals. Currently it's only available in 5 hospitals, nationally, with 2 more starting soon. One was Brigham and Women's in Boston. I can't remember the others, but I'm sure you can check with your local hospital. I'd like to have this option, too. It looks like it's making a comeback here (they used to offer it, but stopped with the popularity of epidurals). Unfortunately, probably not in time for most of us!

All the research I did said it wasn't offered during labor in the US but the hospital I'm delivering at offers it.. so happy.

Are you going to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston? That is one of the hospitals listed in the article. You are lucky!

The others are: Birth Center at the Univ. of CA San Francisco, Vanderbilt University, University of Washington (Seattle) and Okanogan Douglas. "Coming soon" are Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Brigham and Women's.

It looks like some freestanding birthing centers offer it, too.

Lynnsey, I think it said Lewiston, Idaho or something. I could be wrong (would need to look at article again and it's only in the printed edition of FitPregnancy, can't find it online). BTW, I'm from CT, too. :)

Hello there fellow Connecticuter! I see you are due a couple weeks after me too. :)

Yes, so funny! What part of the state are you from? I'm from the NH area...will be delivering at Yale. Would be funny if we were in the same hospital. :haha: Only 24 days for you! I just noticed the baby in your ticker is turned upside down. :haha:

I'm in Greenwich, delivering at Greenwich Hospital (which is part of Yale New Haven!) :)
At my last ultrasound, baby's head was down so I hope that's where he stays! Are you having a boy or girl?

Oh, I love Greenwich hospital!!! It's very nice there. Grew up in Fairfield County and had to have some treatment at Greenwich a while back. I didn't realize it was part of Yale. They seem to be taking over everything! They just bought my sister's hospital (Griffin) and St. Raphael's in NH, too. I have to say, I noticed the policies at Griffin were a little more baby/family friendly since Yale took them over in terms of encouraging skin-to-skin after c-sections, rooming in, etc.

I am having a boy. What about you?

I live in White Plains, NY but will be deliverying at Greenwich hopsital! My doctor is located in Rye so he delivers there. My husband and I are going to the all day birthing class this Sunday!

Another CT person here...but from northeast section.

Manchester hospital does not offer gas/air, but they have stadol or demerol (I think) as alternative pain relief, as well as water birth/labor. C-section rate is 16% I think. Not too bad compared to the national average. I think this is mostly due to the fact that they are really big into the natural end of things. I'm going to try for the water birth, no epidural, and maybe stadol. The childbirth instructor said that stadol was better to start with than the epidural...so we'll see!!
