Gas & Air- USA

it's so unfair that you USA ladies aren't offered it as standard! i had it for a neck injury when they had to snap my neck & head back into the right position in A+E and it was amazing! i mean it doesn't stop the pain but it makes you think the pain is hilarious :haha: great stuff i can't wait to get back on it

:hi: Mazzy, so many CT people, here! Yale has a lot of stuff for natural birthing, too...the birthing rooms are super nice and have showers, birthing balls, squatting bars, etc. and a tub room. They don't let you give birth in the tub, but you can labor in it. It seems very soothing whenever I watch A Baby Story. :haha: You can dim the lights and play music as you'd like. I was surprised during the tour as part of my childbirth class. I thought it'd be very hospitally, but it wasn't at all. I'm going to try and go as long as possible with no pain meds, but will ask for an epidural if I need it. I think it's the only thing you can have during transition? That's why I was thinking the epi...it's there when you need it most. :haha: And they turn it off for the pushing.

I think overall we're very lucky with our hospitals in CT.

We do have it here, but not typically for labor. :nope: They tend to use it a lot for dental procedures. Had it when I got my wisdom teeth out.

I am having a boy. What about you?

Boy here too! :)

I live in White Plains, NY but will be deliverying at Greenwich hopsital! My doctor is located in Rye so he delivers there. My husband and I are going to the all day birthing class this Sunday!

We almost signed up for that class, but we wound up doing the Thursday night (3 weeks) one. We have our last class this coming Thursday. I hope we make it, LOL!

I work in White Plains. Are your doctors part of WestMed?

I forgot to ask about gas and air at my birthing class last week (Greenwich Hospital in CT), but they did bring up that you can get an injection of a pain medicine (like morphine or stadol ,etc). That surprised me that it would be safe for the baby.

Do you have a name picked out Lynnsey? I'm starting to worry that we don't have one, yet...have two top contendors, though.

Did the childbirth class, too (but at Yale). With the shot, you have to get it at a certain point in labor where it'll be out of your system by the time the baby is born. They said it was safe, but not good if it's too close to delivery. You probably already know that and I forgot the exact details. Kind of tuned it out after that because it had me worried and it wears off so early on. I guess it can get you by for a little while. The teacher recommended if you think you'll want an epidural then just to get an epidural. But you can get the shot and decide if you still need an epi or not. The part that I'm really worried about is transition, so will probably have an epidural if I need it.

I'm pretty sure they don't have gas & air in CT. At least according to the articles I read (if it's accurate), it's only in those 5 hospitals I mentioned. Oh well, maybe it'll be an option for our next babies. :flower:

MyTurnYet-no names finalized yet either. We have two top contenders too though, LOL! Brandon and Mason. I like Brandon better than Mason, but have trouble getting by the fact that Brandon is the name of an old friend (he was sort of kind of boy friend too) that I am still friends with, but we don't really speak anymore that much. DH really wanted that name, and it is growing on me now too. We shall see....maybe we have to meet this little guy first before we finally decide on a name. By the way, I really liked Zachary, but DH didn't even want to consider it.

My doctor is part of Westmed in Rye. Dr. Carolan. How about yours?

I go to Putnam OB in Greenwich, but I considered WestMed too when I was looking for a new doctor after I moved here from Norwalk.

I like Brandon, too! I do like Mason, but have seen a lot of Masons lately. I bet you won't even think of your friend/ex at all. You'll just associate the name with your son.

Our top choices are Bradley and Leonardo (he'd be called Leo). My last name is Italian and Leo would go very nicely, but I can't get Bradley out of my head, either. It's tough to decide! I'm glad your DH is giving input! Mine doesn't seem to want to decide on names for some reason, other than to shoot down names I like. :haha: He does like those 2 options, though. We both also like Andrew.

Oh, trust me, I've come up with about 30 names I liked and DH shot down them all! Sometimes *too* much input can be bad too, be careful what you wish for! ;) I like Andrew a lot. Leo is a great name too. It's so hard to decide though, I know what you mean!

ALL of you are lucky! My hospital is notorious for not staffing enough Anesthesiologists and because of this, a lot of women's epidurals run out of the medicine and they end up feeling everything anyway! Apparently they can't add more meds without the anesthesiologist and if he just so happens to be in another surgery you are just plain screwed. I'm currently changing hospitals but if anything is wrong they will have to send me to the other one anyway :( So basically you can choose heavy opiates (demerol) or a shotty epidural that might not even work. I pray everything goes fine so I can stay at the smaller, more caring and compassionate hospital.

What a shame. We have PCA administered epidurals here. Once the Anaesthetist has sited and put the first main dose in he/she then runs the Epidural infusion to run which can be topped up by the woman herself at the press of a button. Prior to this new patient controlled infusion, Midwives had to top the woman up manually with a dose with another midwife, but never need the Anaesthetist again unless there was a problem with the epidural.

:)
