I've just found out that I have GD again (2nd pregnancy). GTT was 8.5 and growth scan shows baby/fluid doing fine for now so I'm really determined to keep it that way. With my DD I was mainly diet-controlled until I just couldn't keep my fasting numbers down and ended up on one shot of insulin at night and was therefore induced at 38 weeks. She was a big baby born by EMCS at 38+3 weighing 9lbs 3oz. I really really don't want another CS (I'm convinced it was the induction that took us down that road - not her size) so am going to be even more strict with myself this time and hope that nature will do its thing before any intervention.

Anyway, my question - what do you ladies do about snacks and drinks between meals? I will try to cut them out entirely but for the first few days I know I'm going to be hungry in between meals on this more restrictive diet. I took by first BS reading after lunch and it was 6.0 but then had a latte an hour later which I'm worried will make my sugar spike without me knowing (I won't test again until an hour after dinner). Obviously I won't be going for anything nice (!) as a snack but I'm scared to even eat an apple!

Apologies for the rambling - you would think I would know how to do this but it slips your mind so quickly!

Thanks. X

Hi -

a couple other mamas just posted up questions on this too - I posted a few ideas in their threads:

Also for drinks - I stick to water, milk, diet soda, or flavored waters (crystal lite generics you mix with water). I'm not sure whats in a latte but if there is regular sugar or milk then that could cause a spike so maybe opt for something with splenda/truvia instead. Milk is fine as long as you count the carbs as part of your snack. Some women are more likely to spike higher than others with it so really just depends on you.

And definitely don't cut out snacks between meals totally - making yourself go hungry has the opposite effect and is still dangerous. Just need to eat throughout the day.

Good luck! It sucked at first but I haven't minded it overall - and its WAY different than how I used to eat.

thx

Hi, I think it is a bad idea to cut down the snacks entirely. Your body will receive a signal that you are starving, and your liver will start pumping up sugar. Another thing, you have to consume a certain amount of carbs during the day (my dietitian told me 175 g), and you can only achieve it by spreading them evenly along the day between meals and snacks.
My snack is usually a slice of low-carb bread or a "smart" tortilla" (contains about 15 g of carbs and a lot of fiber) with cottage cheese, or a tall decaf latte with almonds or any other nuts, or half an apple with a string cheese stick. I was told to always have a carb snack along with some protein, then it wouldn't cause any spikes...
This is also my second pregnancy with GD (maybe even the third one but then I wasn't tested). Was diagnosed at 11 weeks this time :(. I've been also controlling it just with diet and exercise.

Thanks ladies, good advice. You're right I shouldn't cut out snacks entirely (this may have been an issue last time).

The latte is just skimmed milk and not a large cup so I hope that will be ok. I will try out nuts and cheese too.

Have just discovered Bovril too (not sure if you have it in the States?) It's a beef extract drink, low carbs and 20 cal a cup. That should see me through to dinner!
