They tell roughly how far along you are using a few different methods.
They'll use the first day of your last period to determine a rough due date.
Then they'll use an ultrasound around 8 weeks to measure the baby from the top of the head to the bottom of the rump. This gives them a closer estimate of how far you are.
Unless you know the exact day of ovulation, it's pretty much an estimate but they can get pretty close with that first ultrasound.
