Ok, been a while, but need like urgent help.

I had Gastric Bypass about 4.5yrs ago. Now I am 24 weeks pregnant, and the Dr told me I need a gestational diabetes screen (standard)... But the only ones they offer, require you to drink 50g pure glucose in a carbonated, thick drink in like 5 minutes, or apparently they would let me EAT 50g sugar in the form of jelly beans (~65 jelly beans!).

I offered up other suggestions, such as monitoring with a diabetes testing kit, and having me measure my blood sugar 3 times a day for 1-2 weeks (after meals), and do one clean (in the morning, nothing but water for at least 8-12 hours)... But they have so far refused. 3 phone calls, and me telling them why in several ways, and they are basically being as stuborn as possible saying no.

Has anyone else gone through this!?

Hi. I just had to do this test and it is something everyone (or most) have to do at this stage. The drink really isn't that bad. It isn't think, it is just like really sweet cool aid. I was told to keep it refrigerated and drink it cold and I had no issues at all. I won't say it's good for you to have all that sugar, but it's a one time thing. You are saying its 50 mg so I guess this is the 1-hour test you will be doing. I didn't pass this one (I was 5mg over :-() so I had to do the 3 hour and that drink was the same but twice as sweet. Still I was able to finish it with no problem. I hear a lot of women say it's disgusting and throw up but I don't see why honestly...
I am still waiting on the results from that one.
One suggestion, if you decide to do the test make sure not to eat any sugar or carbs before because it may make you fail it. I wish is known that before.

I just did my GST on Friday and the glucose was not bad. It actually was less sweet than an average coke to me and I was able to drink it up in under 2 minutes. The quantity of the liquid was about 12 oz. FYI, the drink was not thick at all. It really was like sugar water to me.

50 g, I fixed my post. I don't know why I was thinking it was MG.

My concern is more the sugar reaction with the bypass. because of the surgery, high sugar items make me have a reaction called dumping syndrome. And that's when I eat something over time. A normal cup of fruit juice, high sugar one, I would still need to cut with water to even tolerate. And even then I have gotten shakey or nauseous.

My drink was 50 g, not mg. I'm not sure how you'll react with your bypass. You could try drinking your glucose in the doctor's office and if you throw up, they might have alternatives?

Off topic, but my sister had the same wedding dress as you for her wedding!

Been wondering about this too! I had a sleeve 3 years ago and am prone to dumping syndrome. I still dilute everything, juice, tea, etc.

I asked my doctor and she said, there are other option and we'll cross that bridge when I get later in my pregnancy.

Did you ask on one of the weight loss surgery forums?

Hey there :) I have a family history of diabetes so i am monitered for GD. I have a glucose monitor (not expensive) and my OB lets me test myself instead of taking the awful drink. I do it over 2-3 days. A fasting test in the morning and then again at 1 hour and 2 hours after each meal.

I hate to say this but the only reason I can think of for your OB office's insistence is that they wamt to squeeze money out of you for the test. I suggest you go in and talk to your OB and insist on doing it the way that you prefer or that you would consider changing OBs.

Best of luck and hope you have a H&H pregnancy!
