What I meant was before the Step B swab to test for it (at 36 weeks).... she said it could help to not test positive for it. I know once you do, you have to have antibiotics (as I did with DD). However, I would LOVE LOVE to test negative for it ONLY because being hooked up to antibiotics immediately upon arrival to hospital after my water broke limited some of the things I wanted to do to ease my labor.

Honestly, I don't see being strep b positive as a big deal at all... apparently it is so common and normal. Just a little bit of a pain when you go into labor to have to do antibiotics if you don't want to be hooked up to meds etc.

Personally I would not do that. What if the garlic made the test negative and you were really positive?? I dont think its worth putting baby at risk of getting the infection.

Hi all, I had a call from the hospital earlier to say that one of my swabs came back positive for gbs. I'm not that surprised tbh, have had a positive swab before and had the antibiotics in labour before too. I'm a little worried this time round as I haven't had a positive swab for quite a few years and never one this early. I also have a cervical suture in and it worries me that they don't want to give antibiotics now, even though I'm surely at more risk of it tracking towards my uterus. I have a midwife appointment on Friday so I will ask her if she will send off my urine to be checked or does it show up on a dipstick test? I'm not sure

It's not something to stress over. Usually it's treated with antibiotics before labor, but can also be treated during. It's best to treat it before if you can. If not it's still not a big deal. I have it this go around and my dr asked when I wanted to treat it. I'm an L&D RN, so she tends to let me run the "show" a bit more. I'm just going to treat it at 20 weeks.

Thanks everyone, I've had time to get over the shock and feel ok about it all now, we'll not happy with the IV antibiotics lol

I don't think I'd do anything to try and show a false negative, I'd rather know and be treated then fake a test

I'm not happy about the IV either, but the last time I had them they put the cannula in. Y hand and ran throug the first bag of antibiotic and then disconnected me from it when it was finished so it didn't affect my mobility at all.i never got the second dose as I laboured quickly after that, but my LO was monitored over isn't in hospital and was absolutely fine

I tested + for GBS in 2009, so they gave me AB's via a drip while in labour with my son in 2011. Took about 20-30 mins, I was busy standing around having contractions anyway so couldn't have cared less lol.. and that was it! Job done!

well i'v gone from not worried to worried. The midwife i was talking to at my 16 week appointment was trying to tell me that even if i show positive they wont give me anti-biotics throughout labour (although she said "im not sure on the protocall though so will need to check that".. lost count of the amount of times she said that to me!!!). So now im sh****ng myself. There will be one hell of a fight if i am positive because i will demand the anti-biotics! Going to speak to another midwife at my next appointment and see what they say. :S i didnt think they had a choice about giving you the anti-biotics if your positive at the end of your pregnancy

Mind you, east Surrey hospital refused to swab me for gbs even tho I had it with first son.....they said its pointless to check I was just creating a fuss!!! I switched to royal Surrey where I was tested and treated!!! X

So she says but she was "unsure" on a lot of things! I think she was pretty rubbish tbh. Even the consultant couldn't answer most of my questions! So going to pester and pester until i get an appropriate answer. I am not having my baby put at risk if they cba with the anti-biotics!

Absolutely, UK recommendations (National Institute of Clinical Excellence and Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists) are to give IV antibiotics in labour if GBS has been found from a swab or the urine in Mum during the current pregnancy. In your shoes, I'd be checking with my obstetrician and suggesting that s/he makes sure the midwives know what the policy is!

Seths mummy - next time you see someone make sure they put that big neon orange sticker on your notes that says 'gbs antibiotics to be given in labour' or something like that anyway, that's what I've got on mine and yes the pp is correct that in this country the guidelines are that if you have a positive swab then you have to have them in labour, no two ways about it. Just start telling them you'll look into medical negligence cases, in sure they'll change their mind then!

Thank you ladies!! I'v not been tested yet this pregnancy... they are not testing till about 35 weeks but now i know the guidlines say they have to then i shall be bringing it up next time i see consultant!

This is my first child and also just been tested positive for GBS (did a private home test). Very scared just like OP. Reading your responses have calmed me down but scared they also wont give me the AB. Why cant anything just be simple x

Thanks for the link . I spoke to mw and she said id receive two bags of AB before baby born and ill have to stay in hospital for minimum 2 days. Feel abit better about it now although still quite daunting. Why dont the UK test for this stuff? x

So ridiculous that we don't, particularly when you see how keen the health professionals are to ensure you have preventative medicine if it's found during your current pregnancy. I was told I'd only have to stay in 1 night so they can observe baby, and I will need to be on antibiotics for minimum of 4 hours before delivery for it to offer protect to the baby
