I had my first ultrasound today, I am 8w2d (very sure of when conception was), I got a good positive test 11 dpo. Serious prego symptoms, extreme.

I go for my first ultrasound and she says - do you have twins in your family. I was like uh what, no...don't say that. She said there is a second sac but she couldn't find a baby and she sees the baby in the other sac and baby has a heart beat. She sends me to a specialist ultrasound, which I had a few hours later. They determined that Baby is 7w0d (way wrong - LM was 10-20-14, and ovulation was 11-1-14 so conceptions was 24 hours ish after that). They said in the second sac was fluid and debris. That is literally what they said.

So thoughts? Twin that didn't come to be. She said the low size of the alive baby could be because it started out as a twin - does that sound right?

Thanks!

Didn't want to read and run, but I have no idea what it could mean. I don't have experience with twins but it makes sense if there are two sacs in there. Has to mean there is or was once another fertilized egg with the other one. Did you ask about it being just a large cyst?

I went for a scan on my last baby at 8 weeks because of spotting and had one empty sac as well my little boy was healthy but a few days smaller as well it is called vanishing twin very common they say 70% of pregnancies can start as twins but because one vanishes we never know

the size of the other baby I would not worry about it is so common for a scan to show baby a little smaller that you expect for dates, they can be curled up which does effect measurement, as I was sent for a repeat scan when I should of been 8 weeks 5 days and baby was still only 8 weeks I nearly died thought that was it but I noticed baby was curled up and asked the girl scanning me if that would effect measurements she said yes it could and as far as she was concerned baby was doing good :flower:

she was right he is 16 months now

my best friend also went for an early scan as she was not to sure when she conceived as she was on the pill at the time and they found 2 babies but one was very small and weaker she had to go for repeat scans but it was 8 weeks and smaller baby did not make it she does now have a very healthy little girl though in her case the other baby was absorbed.

hope that helps a little do remember though even though you are sure when you OV it is also down to implantation as well if it was on the later end it would effect dates as well and more importantly is if a nice little heart beat was seen and baby grows bigger in next scan

That is a very comforting post! Thank you. I didnt realize vanishing twins were so common. I was worried about the baby being so small. I was happy to see a nice strong heart beat though. That was promising and a good feeling. They did not seem concerned about the baby - obviously I was because the dates are so off.

I didnt think about implantation though. There is no way to know when that was, the baby (babies) may have been slow getting comfortable in the uterus ;)

Thank you for taking the time to tell me your experience, I have had kids before but never experienced this.

You are very welcome ☺ everything is so scary in the first 3 months will they do a repeat scan in a week or two and best of luck
