Has anyone got their LO on SMA Wysoy (soya formula)? And message to those having...

No offence but your hv doesn't sound like she knows about intolerances!

I'm having the same with my LO and we have been referred to a paediatrician which is what should happen to you.

Soya should only be given as a last resort as babies with a cows milk intolerance can be allergic to soya which can be immediate or develop later on. Also it has high levels of estrogen which affect babies development! It says from birth on the tin but it's not true, unless it's a last resort.

Also, babies with an intolerance ARE supposed to go on a milk free formula, they don't have to be severely allergic. My LO isn't and is on nutramigen.

Also, you're supposed to be referred to a dietician to help with weaning. They help you re-introduce cows milk on a trial basis and also help if the intolerance hasn't gone. Most babies outgrow it by 1 year not 6 month. Some don't outgrow it until 4/5years.

Hope this doesn't come across rude but it annoys me when some hv's think they know all about a medical condition when they're not doctors.

I agree with you entirely meow, Tiggerpony, the above poster isn't trying to be rude or a bully but she is right, you have every right to a referral and to be prescribed an appropriate formula. xx

Doesn't always happen though, we got no help whatsoever and no referrals.

Certainly push for it, by all means, and above poster is correct, but it doesn't always happen. We had SUCH a hard time getting Seth diagnosed, then when we worked it out we had no choice but to put him on soya coz we didn't realise our GP was meant to do anything to help.

I know this from personal experience; with my second youngest they would not refer him either; you do have a right to a referral though and I don't see anything wrong with pointing this out. I wish with my second youngest I had either seen a different GP at the surgery or gone to A&E because my usual GP and HV could not see a problem they just kept saying it must be a supply issue even though up until 8 weeks he gained up to 22oz a week-then suddenly started gaining 1oz a week some weeks and nothing on others. Although he was never diagnosed, judging by my other children and others in the family it seems it may have been a soya allergy (via my milk) that caused a secondary lactose intolerance, because comfort milk is reduced lactose and at that time was soya-free (it isn't now) then he was ok on it but he now has both a soya and dairy intolerance xx

I phoned my doctor as I was concerned when it was mentioned on this post soya was in aptamil - but he said no, to keep her on it?? I've kept her on it and she has been fine (but also changed her bottles to advent newborn bottles) and is less upset when feeding, also her hives have gone. BUT - she is now constipated! When I told the doc this he just said "it's one of those things" and not to change her milk again cos it will damage her digestive system. :(

go to A and E, aptamil normally gives very runny poo but constipation is another symptom of an allergy xx

no i know hun, i was just saying - i wasnt uneducated in making the decision in using the soya formula is all. and it is important to pressure for referrals had i known at the time if i had known id certainly have pushed harder xx

my Lo tested a weak positive for lactose intolerance and had all the colic symtoms etc for wks, took me ages to get the hv and gp's attention, their just to quick to rule things off as colic etc. I too was told no soya milk till 6mths so jacob has SMA lactose free milk and seems to do much better now. U can only really get the tins at a chemist or boots tho.
