Hey guys i could really do with some help. ive been ever so poorly these last few weeks and the hubby gave me some of his multivits as wasnt eating much. i had one a day for 3/4 days a few weeks back and i took one today although ive been eating healthy-ish. I just found out about vitamin A toxicity just in passing as wasnt told anything about not taking multivits by midwife (yeah she is crappy). am i freaking out about damaging bump too much or have i really done damage? i havent been eating liver and all that but the multivits were 100%RDA of the vit A and ive been eating veggies!!!. please help me to stop freting!!!
arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The only vitamins you need to take are either Prenatal vitamins or Flintstones complete vitamins if your stomach can not take the prenatal vitamins. It is not a good idea to take any other vitamins or medications without first speaking to your doctor/midwife. In my case- I take 2 Flintstone complete vitamins at night before going to bed because the prenatal vitamins are just to strong and make me sick. Be sure to speak with your health care provider before taking anything just to save from hurting your little one. Hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months and take care of yourself :-)

I'm confused, were you taking the multivitamins in addition to your regular prenatals? If not, I wouldn't worry about overdosing on vitamin A. Yes, it can be toxic, but you'd have to take much more than 100% of the daily recommendation before you'd "feel" the effects. Also, pregnant women need a little more of everything than other people, so I'm sure you're fine.

The vitamin A you get from plant sources isn't going to hurt you - it's in a form that the body only converts to vitamin A as needed.

You should still get some proper prenatal vitamins instead, though - better to have a lower dose of vitamin A in the pills, and let your diet make up the rest! There's small amounts of vitamin A in lots of foods.

thanks every one! I havent touched any since and no i havent been taking any other vitamin tablets as midwife on phone said there was no need if i ate a more than relativly healthy diet, which im doing so. My worry was over taking them when i was too poorly to eat. Thankyou so much mama627 for puting my mind at ease. Should i stil take vit tablets? Is it too late? Im 16.5 wks. Ive finaly got an apointment with midwife in 2 days who i havent been able to see until now as theyre rubbish.

Although it's reccomended not to take any non-pregnancy specific multivitmins because of the higher dose of Vit A, 3/4 tablets won't hurt I'd imagine. Don't take anymore, but I'm pretty sure everything's fine. Remember back in our parents time when they didn't have this kind of information, they use to eat pate, liver, shellfish - even people that smoke and drink during pregnancy sometimes go on to ahve healthy babies (NOTE - I am NOT condoning at all, this is just to make a point!), so I'm sure 3/4 regualr multivitamins won't hurt at all. x
