I had something possibly similar. It was like a sharp, stabbing, twisting pain low down by my pant line. It came and went, and was worse when I stood up or walked around. When lying down I thought 'oh, it's gone.' But I'd stand up and it'd be back.
In the end I didn't want to panic myself silly or take any risks, so we rang the 24hr midwife number. They told me they couldn't help until 24 weeks, but that it didn't sound normal so I should pop down to ER.
My husband drove us down and we were checked by a nurse after about 40 minutes. We were then told to wait to see the GP, and that took maybe another 40 minutes. All in all by the time we saw the doctor the pain had subsided and was about 2-3 hours after it all began.
To be honest, he didn't really have much explanation, and said it was more than likely growing pains or something I ate.
I saw my own GP the next day and he concurred that it was nothing to worry about. We heard the babies heartbeat and everything seemed fine, so we've left it at that.
I'm sorry this doesn't give you any answers, but I would say always get stuff like this checked out just to put your mind at rest. There is nothing worse than worrying and feeling guilty that you might not be helping your baby. I doubt very much that the hospital staff will treat you as a time waster, as they do appreciate how scary all this can be!
I hope you are feeling better soon. x
