Yes you can shed the herpes virus without an active lesion, and there is not even a month-long limit. I have even seen a case where a wife gave herpes to her husband without ever having an outbreak in her lifetime (we proved it came from her because she had IgG or old antibodies against herpes in her blood stream and her husband had only IgM or new herpes antibodies in his bloodstream--he hadn't had herpes long enough to make IgG antibodies). A lot of people who get herpes from a sexual partner never saw any lesions on their partner. The moral of the story is that you can shed the virus without seeing any active lesions and herpes can cause meningitis in a newborn. This doesn't mean it will happen, of course, but your doctor should give you the option of having a c-section.
