Someone posted on here a couple of weeks ago about an older child having hip dysplasia. My LO was diagnosed this week so I thought I might share my experience in the hope it will help someone else.

My LO is 10 months old in a couple of days and at her 8 month checking pestered the nurse until she checked her hips. It turned out she had asymmetrical folds which would require an ultrasound. By the time we were able to get in for an ultrasound she was a week off 10 months and therefore needed an X-ray as the bone had started to form.
These were delivered to thr dr that day and the following day we were referred to an orthorpedic surgeon and the appointment booked for "2 days time. The surgeon wasted no time reccommending a brace and sending us off to get it straight away.
LO will bein the rhino brace for 12 months full time (22 hours a day) and then at night for a while. We have just had the first night sleeping in it and although its now 6 a and she is sleeping in my arms she did really well last night.

I guessing want to reassure others that although it can be missed early children adapt, it's worse for us than it is for them.

Thank you for posting. At my little boys 8 week check they noticed asymetrical folds on his thighs- he is being referred to hospital for ultrasound. I am so gutted for my wee boy but its good to see some reassurance on here. xx

I had hip dysplasia...Mine was discovered at 8 months, I came out of the plaster at 15 months and was walking by 16 months.

My sister was over a year and had started walking before hers was discovered and she was put in full plaster as well, she came out of plaster at 18 or 19 months and again was walking properly a few weeks later...so just to reassure you that it will all be fine!!

I've obviously had my LO scanned & x rayed from 8 weeks onwards and so far so good, got another X Ray in 2 months' time to confirm that all is well!

My lo was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 5 months and had to get a nappy splint on for 4 months, she started crawling the day she got it off.

DD2 had scans as a newborn and they said everything was fine...... But now that she's crawling I've noticed she drags her left leg behind her and I am terrified she has it, as all the girls/woman on my side of the family have hip problems on their left sides, the hv told me to wait until she was walking to see if she has a likp but I don't know if I can wait that long to find out, thanks for the reassurance ladies I knew babies can adapt to any situation but thought it would be more difficult for older babies, my lo is almost 10 months

My LO is having an ultrasound April 3rd due to "loose ligaments" found at her 2 month doctors visit. I'm praying that she doesn't have dysplasia. There is no clicking/popping/clunking, and her folds are not asymmetrical. But if she does need a harness or brace I'm sure it will be much worse on me than on LO. Thanks for posting this thread. At least we all know we're not alone!

I'm glad to hear that your little one is doing well and adapting to the brace well. I noticed that my DD has assymetreical creases (she has 2 on her right side) so I took her to the dr at 4 1/2 months. She was referred for an ultrasound but her hips were both normal.

Sophie has asymmetrical leg an buttock folds, but no health professionals seem to care. I'm struggling to get it looked at and I've been pestering since she was born.

Thanks everyone. She is coping very well and crawling everywhere still. Standing is difficult but she is stubborn and keeps trying. Mrskyliepayton and Minties I really pushed the health nurse to check, if she hadn't I would have taken her straight to the Dr and got her to check. If we waited it would probably be a lot more invasive and the orthorpedic surgeon wanted it sorted straight away.

Robyn has immature hips, and is in cloth nappies to treat them and we are taking precautions such as using a properly supportive baby carrier and not letting her have a jumperoo as they can put pressure on the hips. She has had several ultrasounds, and one hip is fine now, but the other has not improved. We have an x-ray in June (she'll be 8 months) and if there's still no improvement they'll consider a brace or harness.

She shows no signs- her hips don't click, her creases are symmetrical. The only reason we found out was because she was breech and had a scan as a precaution. Her 2nd cousin had clicky hips and his scan was fine.

Sorry if the last reply sounded abrupt, LO kept deleting what I wrote.

The surgeon said in our case that he was unwilling to leave it because if he did then it would be a lot harder to correct and would need surgery. This way we hope to avoid all of that. At 9 months the bone is developing very quickly which is why he had to act in our case because the socket is very shallow.

I believe the earlier they catch it the less time they need in a splint or harness.

Sproglet my LO has been in an ergo from day 1 hopefully ican still use it. I wanted to do cloth nappies but, with the amount of travelling we have been doing its not practical.

I wish everyone the very best of luck and I would love to hear how you all get on.

Although it still seems very daunting and scary at times I know that there are people far worse off than me and I'm grateful that she is happy and healthy :)

Enjoy your weekend.
