It doesn't bother me so much as they can call their kid what they want but it does bother me when they moan about people mispronouncing and mis-spelling it. Wtf do you expect?

Yeah, agreed. My surname has a few alternative spellings and yes it is irritating having to spell it out the whole time, but that isn't other people's fault, I can't expect them to psychically know which way it's spelled.

The irritating thing is that my OH has an unusual surname what anoyes him is when he spell's it out for them, they still spell it wrong. Why ask how to spell it and then write it out wrong anyway?

We have this exact same problem and it drives me insane, our surname is Allee but no matter how many times I spell it for them they always spell it Alley, or pronounce it Awl-ee!

My first and my maiden name are often spelt wrong, but it doesn't bother me. I always laugh at my B'day card from Sister-in-law, it is still spelt wrong, and I've known her for over 6 years.

I do find it silly that my maiden name is spelt wrong, as it is a common word. A lot of people get ie and ei muddled up.

I wanted a name that couldn't be spelt or pronounced wrong, hopefully Toby is simple enough.

My nickname; Char/Charly is pronounced 'Shar'... Or 'Shar-lee'... I always get 'Tchar' (difficult to write down, but that's the best I can do!!) like 'Charlie'...I've had some people get funny about it, so I'm like...It's 'Shar-lott' why should shortening it change the sound?

I have a cousin called 'Mhairi'...pronounced 'Var-ee' Very pretty, but obviously one that people find difficult to pronounce until they're told how to.

i thought the original spelling was lyla...is that oasis's fault?? I'd be tempted to say Lila like "lee-la", cos of the french pronunciation! or it might be german, i get confused

I know what you mean though it's always being pronounced wrong, we have had leela before too. In my baby name book, its Lilah and Lila, but oasis spelt it Lyla, and me being the chav that I am added a H at the end, thinking im all clever and wanting her to stand out from the crowd.

I wasn't laughing at the spelling issue people are talking about. What you quoted has no real relevance to the general opinion that spelling a name in a bizarre and unpronouncable way just to look cool is a silly thing to do

What I meant in the piece you quoted was if someone wanted to call their kid AMY or AIMEE which both mean "loved", but wanted to be super cool and different and spell it AMI, without realising that AMI means "friend", not "loved" as they had originally intended, and they don't even bother to find that out...you see...

In the case I talked about they should care. In France they would be called Friend. That of course isnt so bad. But take "Chaise" as an example. In France and French speaking countries, they are a chair. All because someone wanted that i in there without thinking

And some people do still consider meanings. I'm not being a snob, other people can do what they want. Just personally I like to. I think it's interesting, rather than just being a collection of sounds
