So my doctor finally agreed to write the order so I could have the HSG done. This is after ttc since July 2012 and 4 unsuccessful rounds of clomid. So Friday I went into the radiologists office and they started the procedure and it hurt so badly they couldn't finish. I am so disappointed in myself that I couldn't just suck it up, but they tried once and the dye wasn't going anywhere so they had to reposition the catheter and try again and I just couldn't take it. Has this every happened to anyone else? Basically the procedure was a waste of time because they didn't get any really good pictures. The dye just pooled in my uterus.

Hi,

I had hsg on 3d of October and it hurt but not too bad. The dye first showed just my left tube so they fixed me in the right side and put more dye and at the end we could see clearly two tubes. Before the procedure I took two tablets ibuprofen. Did you get something?

I took 800 mg 45 minutes before the test which didn't seem to help. I wonder if it is because I have a retroverted uterus? I did tell the radiologist before that my uterus was tilted. I am thinking I might call the specialist we went to a few months ago back and have him do it. I wonder if since it was just the hospital radiologist he might not do them as often which is why he had trouble positioning everything correctly. Maybe the RE will have better luck! I guess first I need to see if insurance will cover a second one...

They had problem with putting my catheter too. But all went fine. I hope you sort it out soon. X

I had an hsg done in September and it was horribly painful. My cervix wasn't wanting to cooperate, but finally after about 45 minutes and 4 different catheters they managed to get it through, that wasn't the painful part though. When they started the dye, the pain started. I only have one tube, and it was showing that it was blocked, the radiologist wanted to shoot more dye through the catheter to try to get the blockage out, but I begged him to stop, I felt like I was going to faint from the pain. So he stopped. I think it's just so different for everyone, as our bodies react so differently.

I had my HSG in August. It was extremely painful, and I also took 800 mg Ibuprofen before hand. The catheter fell out while they were doing mine, and it had to be put back in again.

I'm sorry you couldn't get any pictures...I would hate to have gone through that with no answers :(

Well I guess they got enough pictures because my doctor called this morning and said my right tube is blocked. They are referring me to a RE to have that fixed.

It is good that all of this was not in vein. I hope all will go well for you.

I'm glad for you that they we're able to get pictures after what you went through. I hope all goes well with your surgery :flower:

Do you think I will have to have surgery? I was hoping there was another way to open it up. I am still waiting to be scheduled with the specialist to figure out the next steps!

I'm not sure if there's another way to unblock tubes or not. I just found out about a month ago that my only tube was blocked. I was originally told that we would have to do ivf by my obgyn, but when I met with our fertility specialist a couple weeks ago, he said that the laparoscopic surgery was the better choice before jumping straight to ivf. So, I don't think there's other options, but I could be wrong, I'm so new to having blocked tubes. I wish I could be more help.

I appreciate the insight! Tomorrow I am meeting with a specialist. Looks like your surgery is scheduled in November? I hope it goes well!! Fingers crossed for you!

You're very welcome and thank you! Yes, it's November 8th. I'm nervous about it, but excited at the same time. I'm just looking at it as being one step closer to finally having a baby! I hope all goes well at your specialist appointment tomorrow. Hopefully you will be one step closer also! Let me know how everything goes.

I would be excited too! I think it is great you will be one step closer!!

So the appointment today was good, I think. The problem is the HSG results were inconclusive but they think maybe both my tubes are blocked. So the best option is the surgery...well maybe not the same surgery you're having, but something similar that will show if and where the tubes are blocked. So now we are just trying to figure out if it's covered...which it probably won't be. So another option is to try the HSG again...with some Valium for me! Basically I am waiting to hear back on what my insurance will cover. I know anything with the word infertility in it is not covered. They only cover the diagnoses and after that I am out of luck. The dr said it could be that my tubes are fine and I had a bad reaction to the dye which caused my tubes to spasm and close up. So I hope that's the case!!

I hope that your tubes were just going through spasms! That would be great!! My insurance is the same way, once that word fertility comes up, they won't cover anything once infertility is mentioned. It's really a big problem with alot of insurance companies. I'm glad their giving you a Valium for your next hsg! If I ever have one again I'm asking for the same thing, lol! I heard it really helps.

Let me know what you find out. I wish you the best!!

Well turns out my insurance will cover the surgery so they are doing a diagnostic laparoscopy. Not sure when...have to wait for my period to come. I am confused though if this surgery is just to go in and look and see what is wrong or if they will in fact fix the tubes. I need to find that out I guess!

I would call your specialist and speak to the nurse. I'm sure she would be able to tell you what exactly the doc plans on doing once the laparoscopic shows something. Surely they would go ahead and make any repairs that they would need to, if any, while they already have you in surgery. I would hope so at least! I'm glad your insurance covers the procedure, that's great news!! Let me know when your surgery is scheduled for when you find out, I'll say a prayer for you :flower:

I was diagnosed with secondary infertility after having 4 kids and a year of TTC with my new husband. After 18 months i had an HSG showing both tubes were blocked. We were sent to a FS specialist who wanted us to jump straight to IVF. Even when i asked about other options she said "we dont like to recommend that, when would you like to start ?" For a lot of reasons we have no interest in IVF, including money, we too have to self fund and we were denied medical loans. I started doing my research online and decided to get a tubal recanulization. It took some hoop jumping but I had it scheduled. My OB's office kept trying to tell me "we dont refer for that" and that i'd have to go to another OB local to the hospital where i was going (its not done at my local hospital) and on and on and on. Finally the woman understood. I tried to tell her that if i needed bloodwork before dental surgery i didn't need a new dentist, just a facility where i could get my blood drawn, apparently that made sense.

A tubal recanulization is NOT a surgery ! Its performed by an Interventional Radiologist (not available at all hospitals), the same Dr who performs a heart cath and in exactly the same manner. Its a simple procedure, low risk and can be covered by insurance as a diagnosis for infertility, as it's not technically a fertility treatment.

I had it scheduled for the 22nd of October and went in ready to have the procedure. They did another HSG and confirmed both tubes were blocked. THEN the brilliant man used a cath balloon, added some internal pressure and IMMEDIATELY my right tube opened and my left was partially blocked distally (at the ovary not at the uterus, theres not necessarily much they can do for that). When i got my first HSG they had a theory i probably had one or both blocked tubes but manged to get pregnant (3 years between kids, no BC, we also werent TTC just NTNP). The new Dr suggested I might not have any trouble getting pregnant even with that partial blockage.

My HSG is not hurt, at all, not a single bit and I wondered if it was because both my tubes were blocked. Everyone else that said their hurt had at least one open, or partially blocked tube and mine were both blocked at the uterus.

I talked to the nurse scheduling person today and she said a bunch of things I didn't understand but did also say they would fix whatever they could while in there. So they were trying to schedule the surgery for the 18th but that was assuming my period would come around the 8th....well my period arrived tonight so I guess it looks like surgery is next week! I am hoping to do it the 8th so I have the weekend to recover.
