Hungry Milk Misconceptions/Thoughts...

so where do I sit then when they say to wean a prem baby at 5 month from birth age which only makes Ellie 13 weeks?? but she needs this as her iron levels have dropped and does this mean that she is going to have tummy problems or have allergies or end up over weight xxx

and also when I had mia the "guidelines" were 4 month and when she was just over 5 month they changed it to 6 month was I supposed to take my daughter off food for 3 weeks as the "guidelines" changed xx

We would all still be here if we were weaned at 6 months but there would be less of us with ibs and gluten intolorances.

My thoughts exactly.

Waiting does no harm whereas early weaning could.

waiting with Ellie could have her in hospital back on drips and after seeing her go through all this in special care I would never want to see her go through that again xx

The guidelines are currently being reviewed again. I have said i am open to weaning before 6 months, doesn't mean to say that will happen. Will wait and see. It's like anything else in life, early weaning may mean some problems for some people, but it might not. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who were weaned early who have had no problems in later life.

Actually they aren't, there was a paper in one of the medical journals a few months back; it was just a new interpretation of old studies and didn't feature any new research; also it was widely discredited when it was revealed that 3 of the scientists who contributed; had also recently done work for formula/baby food companies. Shortly after this paper came out; both the WHO and the UK government clearly stated that they do not think this paper holds any weight; since it isn't saying anything new, so I doubt they will change the guidelines.

was just looking into the weaning thing to get some recipes and the NHS "guidelines" for weaning are "around" 6 month.

Claire you have medical reasons for weaning early and the government guidelines say 6 months is best but sometimes there are reasons for weaning before then; but it should be no earlier than 17 weeks; no-one is attacking you for weaning at 4 months on medical advice or in general, I don't see anything wrong though with pointing out that the WHO are not just being all 'modern', 'trendy' or whatever by advising waiting until as close to six months as possible is optimum in most cases, they are basing it on sound medical research.

Your weaning on medical advice which is being done in the best interents of your child. Before they can advise anyone on early weaning there will have been hours and hours of research which will have came to the conclusion that the benefits from early weaning are far greater than any side affects that might happen.

not once did I mention AT ALL that anyome was attacking me I just asked questions to show that again all the "guidelines" really are just guidelines that migh have to be changed for whatever reason, there are people on this forum and others that have been old there baby hasnt gained enought weight for being for months so have been told to start weaning

I was just saying that it can all be changed by drs HV nutritionist etc when its suits them. For the one time when Mia was being weaned at the recommended age of 4 month and then when she was a little over 5 month I was supposed to stop giving her her solids for 3 weeks til she go to 6 month.

Its really hard for mums who have had 1 or more babys before and fed at the recommended age of 4 month then it changes to 6 month cause it can cause allergies etc well now it leaves mums who weaned at 4 month, such as me thinking that if my eldest gets an allergy is it my fault cause I weaned her at 4 month when now the recommended age is 6 month, bit unfair

my OH and his brother were weaned both at 6 and a half month my OH has IBS, lactose and glucose intolerance and so does his brother but his sister was weaned at just under 4 month and has no health problems at all

Tbh, this is all aload of crap.
Guidelines are just that GUIDElines.
Some babies need early weaning due to being prem, reflux etc
Some parents choose to wean at 4months, it isnt the guidelines but if they know the reasons as to why its recommended to wait till 6months and they .still choose to wean at 4months, thats down to them. More babies weaned at 4months will go on to have problems later on in life.
Some parents choose to wait till 6months as the guidelines recommend, some of these babies will still go on to have problems later on in life BUT they cannot be related to early weaning.

Personally unless for medical reasons i wouldnt wean my baby early, simply because if my baby went on to have problems later on in life i know that his body was just 'programmed' to have them issues, it isnt due to going against guidelines.

I have 3 kids aged 18, 10 and baby Ollie. The first two were weaned at 3/4 months and both perfectly well balanced kids eat every veg thrown at them NO allergies and are not overweight - I did what I thought right as amother and it worked.

With Ollie I will wait till 4 months as I return to work a 6 months old and I want him settled. If that's selfish then so be it but only I know what's best for my baby.

Ollie is on Hipp hungry milk at bedtime he has a 7oz bottle and sleeps 8pm to 4am then reverts to normal formula in the day

Hungry milk didn't work for us (made him unsettled and constipated and he ate more on it!) so we stuck with the 1st milk even in the 56oz a day times! lol

As for weaning - 17 weeks and Earl stealing marmite on toast off my hubby's plate kind of gave us a clue that solids were on the cards. We took it slow, no gluten, no refined sugar, fruit and veg only until 6 months. Mixture of purees and finger foods from day 1. I now have a happy, healthy, perfectly proportioned, balanced, energetic 17 month old little boy with no allergies and who will literally eat anything that's thrown at him.

In my opinion, I did what was right for him and for my family.

yeah I think that its all just guidelines too an every baby if diff so its really down o your own opinion when to wean or change on to hungty baby milk. Ellie is on hungry baby milk and solids now 3 small meals a day and she loves it xx
