I just ate a sponge. (bath sponge) :(

I LOVE chewing the sponge, I also sit and sniff it... and the shower scrubber... and I clean the bathroom then sit and sniff the cleaning cloth... I also bought some brasso to polish up the stainless steel and I sniff the cloth off that, in very limited amounts as ITS A SOLVENT!!!! Im pretty sure this is common but its freaking me out I love the smell of the firelighters for the open fire! Surely its not good for me????? I have to physically restrain myself from cracking open the turpentine!!! Ive heard that you get Pica cravings when you have iron deficiency... for those who have had the 28week bloods took did you get your iron results? mine are borderline so that could explain it???

You have Pica. It is a condition in which woman crave non food items during pregnancy. It normally is dirt, rocks, chalk, clay and ice, but can be other items as well. They believe this is caused by iron-deficiancy. Tell your doc so they can check your blood for its iron levels. Please don't ingest these items as they can be toxic. Good luck.

I agree, I'd get your iron levels checked. In both my pregnancies I've craved towels and in my first pregnancy I chewed loads on them!! I've needed iron tablets in both pregnancies so I would def get checked out to be on the safe side :flower:

So funny! I thought me eating coffee grinds was weird:haha: Nothing is wrong with you so try not to worry. You are still cool in book:hugs:

This was just on an episode of " I'm pregnant and I have pica".
The woman like to smell correction fluid 10x a day and gasoline at the pump. Unfortunately her first baby died of SIDS, so there is really no way to tell how much the chemicals played on the baby's nervous system. She was pregnant again, and once again the baby was wisked away to be treated b/c of respiratory problems. Inhaling solvent is OBVIOUSLY not good for you.:nope: Other than the fact that people get high from it(yes, I understand that the intention of those people are different than yours, but the act remains the same), it damages brain, nerve and tissue cells. Just the facts alone surrounding why people should stay away from these items while pregnant should overrule any craving. Please talk to your doc so you can get some help!
(this is not a judgement-only a nudge of advice:))

 the title of your thread cracked me up hehe! i think you're fine providing you're not actually swallowing it xx

now I want to chew on a sponge, and I do have low iron lol maybe that's why I wanted to eat Keira's crayons

Seriously you killed me with that one, i laughed so hard Eve came out of playing in her room to ask what i was laughing at!! :)

Hmm, I was anaemic a lot when I was younger, and that's when I wanted liked to chew sponges before - maybe THAT's why!?!?!?!

I had another go at the sponge but as it's a new one it seems a shame to rip it up with my teeth so seemed satisfied with licking and biting it
I could do it all day but luckily I'm so busy I don't have time to think about it too often lol xxx

Lol I'm sitting here reading this thread trying to stop myself running to the bathroom and finding my brand new sponge, LOL!

I dont actually sit for minutes inhaling he smells of things, I just like the smell of them in the atmosphere around me, I think you have mistook the element of silliness from my post. Please be assured that I dont sit getting high from the brasso, I dont put the cloth to my nose and sniff it... but when Im cleaning I like the smell of these things around me... I love the smell of the dettol and find myself cleaning with it 10 times a day just so that the house smells of it... I dont sniff it from the bottle.

I'm not on third tri yet, but I'm v. interested in the pica/iron thing. With DS 1&2 I had very low iron & LOVED to sit in the bath & secretly chew a ramer sponge  At least I now have a partial explanation - I've never told anyone that before because I thought it was just me!!

Keeping an eye on my iron this time round & no sponge cravings yet, but one whiff of Wrights Coal Tar Soap at Tesco last week & I had to put it straight in the trolley! I am loving smelling of it all the time (it's very strong & distinctive). The best thing is DH has taken to using it too now & appears not to have noticed that the extra attention that he's getting has been as a result :haha:

Lol this is hilarious, but hey, at least your not putting on any extra weight craving sponges! :D

I'm the same, but it's only happened during 3rd tri.
I craved the touch of one of these ...

And I was picking at it everytime I went in the bath and it made my mouth water. When I got out, I actually cry to my OH because it felt like I was "missing" it. If there's any sponge infront of me, I can happy sit there and pull it apart.

oHHH im so sorry but that is soooo funny!!! that really made me laugh : )
I miss my sponge : ( lol

xxx thanks for making my day better : )

Im so the same, after so many ladies talking of sponges i bought two and spent the evening smelling them, what i think is funny though is my husband doesnt even raise an eyebrow anymore. lol!

I so sit and sniff vick nasal inhaler. But however much i would love to sit smelling bleach or milton all day i dont, i like my house to smell of it though lol!

I was desperate for wet sponges when pg with my daughter, think I was dehydrated lmao
