I know its DM but terrifying!

Esp daily mail. I read a few other articles. None reassured lol but not all that bad. Then o saw one aboit commonwealth games. Gulp! Going to hide from the news.

I always check what's reported against the WHO website the death rate so far has been about 54% (that's the confirmed cases) I do think we will see a case here in the UK in a few months though.

They say it kills 90% of people it infects and then goes on to say not even 700 people of the 1200 infected have died... I mean, that's still alarmingly high, but it's not 90%.

Ebola comes and goes on a fairly regular basis as I understand it. I think given that it's not as easily spread as other viruses it's a bit more containable on a global level than say SARS or some other easily transmittable infection.

I think I also recall reading that the haemorrhaging doesn't occur in a majority of the cases.

It depend which strain of Ebola it is. Some do have 90% mortality rate. This one is not as lethal, luckily, although the 50-60% mortality is still pretty terrible.

ETA Ebola Zaire strain is the 90% mortality strain. The one in this outbreak is not the Zaire strain.

Honestly, I'm more worried about scientists like Yoshihiro Kawaoka creating deadly viruses deliberately.

They had a doctor on This Morning and he said there is very little to worry about and he's not concerned, he said it isn't airborne so not as contagious as the flu. It convinced me enough not to think twice. I think it's a bit of a media frenzy and the government is just taking necessary precautions but probably under pressure when the media jumps on something like this as well.

I don't watch the news or read papers apart from my local one as I've come to realise a lot of it is scare mongering. Fair enough swine flu did affect a lot of people but does anyone remember the bird flu? And how the papers and news were all in a flap about that?

I saw the doctor on This Morning too and that's good enough for me right now. I just don't see how getting myself terrified of it is going to do me any good. I'm not going to Africa and neither are any of my friends or family members. I don't go around exchanging bodily fluids willy nilly so I'm not going to trouble myself with it all unless it becomes a real problem here.

No punn intended? ;)

^ nor me but sneezing?

I just wondered why they had a cobra meeting if not worried? Is that standard. Honestly I think they will play it right down. I don't know whats worse that or thermonuclear war lol

The bigger issue isn't exchanging bodily fluids by choice, ex kissing/sex/etc, its an infected person spewing infectious fluids onto others because they can't help it. It happens so suddenly, kind of like how morning sickness can strike you out of nowhere and you just have to puke literally that second, but this is a very forceful, projectile type. And of course hemorrhagic bleeding getting on others. But yes, its a direct contact thing, not airborne. The infected material would have to directly come in contact with you.

Sorry to keep adding gruesome tidbits...I can't help myself with scientific things I find interesting. But as the news has said, it IS highly unlikely to spread outside of Africa, due to the way it spreads. They are doing their best to contain it there, although that does look to be problematic to keep it from spreading to surrounding regions. Historically, the small outbreaks that have occurred outside of Africa, typically a scientist who got infected, are isolated immediately, and contained to that person.

As I say I reckon they're being cautious it is a deadly disease in a country with links to the UK after all, it's a good thing they're acknowledging it, but probably wanting to be seen to not be ignoring it as well, the media is doing their usual shit storming so wouldn't want to be seen to do nothing.

I don't pretend to be a doctor but he said it isn't as transmittable as flu and isn't airborne, his words were "I'm more worried about cycling to work safely" but then that is shit scary around here!

The scariest fact is that you can have it for 21 days before knowing, but still not bothered. Josie Cunningham on This Morning was more frightening.

Yep, media like to blow everything up to be way more traumatic than it actually is. And I agree, I think cycling to work would be a bigger worry than worrying about it spreading to 1st world countries and causing a pandemic. I think they'd catch it right away as soon as a person showed symptoms, because with all this going on, obviously someone would know if they had been in that region to have caught it.

ETA: the 2 American scientists are a good example of it being caught immediately and isolated before any spread. Both came home from working in those regions, and then showed symptoms once home. Both were isolated immediately, and families isolated immediately. it didn't spread to their families, as was caught right away, and both have remained isolated incidents having spread no further than the person infected.

I read about a study on pigs where it evolved airbourne and the chimps caught it without contact. Guess thats a nice thought :/

I don't think I've seen that study...As far as I've read, the Ebola and Marburg viruses are both very slow mutating viruses, nothing like flu or colds that rapidly mutate. They haven't had a need to mutate, because so far they have always been just as effective in what they do. There's not a treatment that diminishes their effectiveness to cause them to need to mutate yet.

I coukd have panic read and misread because so. Will look later x thanks though. Its nice to see rational replies. Being ill or ill babies scares me. Esp schools etc so close knit
