Sorry, it's not a personal thing, but this makes me angry. My little guy went up until now with only one or two bouts of hiccups...and now suddenly he's getting them a couple times per day. And it's terrifying me. After every hiccup bout, I find myself poking and shaking my belly until I get a response from him to show me he's still alive, and I picture these terrible scenarios where the cord is around his neck during labor and pushing makes it worse.
I wish this were never posted here. I researched it, and yes, it can indicate a problem, but it's extrenely rare that it does.

And I know others now feel this same way.
We should be happy to feel our baby's hiccups....not sitting here in fear that there's something wrong.

Rhys had hiccups a lot when I was pregnant with him and never had a cord problem

Liam hasnt had them at all yet but if he did I wouldnt worry

:hugs::hugs:

Ki and ry always had hickups! They were both perfectly healthy!
Liam has had hick ups twice already today and each time they have lasted ages! hes still wiggling about and im sure hes perfectly fine!

Please dont worry your boy will be just fine :hugs:

not true... My baby has had hiccups snce 34 weeks, I question the doctor and her exact words were "GREAT! She has a good set of lungs" But don't be alarmed if you don' notice ur baby having hiccups because of their postions or they may do it while u are sleeping.

I had the cord wrapped around my neck twice, and the doctor handled it very well! So even if there's a problem, it can turn out just fine!

Just thought I would share :D

Must admit that post did scare me too as my baby gets them all the time! I try not to think about that though because lots of women on here said that their babies had hiccups loads and never had any cord issues so I try to look at hiccups in a positive light and reassure myself that it means everything is fine. Like you said I think it is very rare but I understand what your saying because all it takes is that tiny seed to be planted into your head and then you can't help but worry. Am sure whoever posted it though did it out of genuine concern rather than anything else and didnt mean to scare us xx

Yeah I got told loads of hiccups were a good thing. It makes their lungs and diaphragm stronger. Lily gets them several times a day for a god 5-10 minutes each time and even though it does my head in lol, I know that she's okay because of them so don't worry hun. Your bubs is fine i'm sure xx

Thought i would stick my oar in on this one...although i have yet to experience them with myself my mum has told me that with me and my two brothers we had hiccups a lot, usually after she drank something fizzy (lol) and all three of us were fine with no cord issues!

Mine gets them twice a day lasting 5 or so minutes. I heard its a sign of good lungs and that the diaphragm is working well ready for her to take her first breath. Im not going to worry about it.

One of mine has them right now. They get them about twice a day and i too was told it was a good sign that their lungs were developing.

Ive not read the other post but ill be ignoring it.

Hiccups is a sign that their practicing breathing. Which is obviously a good thing lol. My girl gets them at least once a day!

Glad you posted this, because I felt the same way! I don't think that ignorance is best, but I researched a bit too and it really seems like this is a non-issue. And, I just HATE when people bring up things that are extremely rare situations. All they do is add stress no matter how stupid you know it is!

Well I’ve never felt hiccups and that worries me just as much. haha

I have read hundreds of articles about cord problems and I can categorically confirm that hiccups are not an indicator of a cord problem.

It means that your baby is drinking his/her amniotic fluid, and practicing breathing that's it.

Don't worry.

hiccups are a way for the baby to practise breathing - my lo causes major belly wobbles when she has them and both my mw and consultant said it is a very good sign. it means they are strengthening their lungs ready for their first breath.

try not to worry hun i know it must be hard being on bed rest as you will notice every little thing.

oh and i mean no offence but unless advice comes from someone who works in the field or has experienced it firsthand take everything with a pinch of salt. xx

I also like to point out, that a LOT of babies do come out with the cord around there necks, its fairly common compaired to other birth/pregnancy issues, and a good chunk of the time, it never causes a problem.

Hiccups are one of the most normal and natural things a baby can do in the womb!

Yeah, as others have said, hiccups are perfectly natural. They are a routine part of fetal development. If babies having hiccups signalled cord issues, midwifes and consultants would monitor them and ask us about frequency etc. I, for one, know my MW hasnt once mentioned them. Dont worry hun x

I feel pretty silly to ask but why would a fetus having hicups mean cord issues?? I have even pulled some of my medical books and theres nothin in there about it being related to cord issues... and from what I know medically, I cant see how it would be connected to cord issues?? I may have to do some more reading!
