I am considering doing ivf but wanted to know what testing I should have done first. A little history about myself: I have 4 children and never had any m/c's until after my 4th child. I have since had 3 m/c's and have been told that they think it's due to my age and old eggs (I just turned 40). I want to have some tests run first to make sure that the problem is my age and old eggs and then if it is I can do ivf to make sure we get a good egg fertilized and if it's something else we can fixt it and ttc again naturaly. my ins. does not cover any fertilty tests/treatments so I was wondering if you ladies could tell me what tests I should have my gyno run. Also can anyone tell me the general cost for ivf in the u.s.?

Hi,

I can give you a little bit of advice, as we did pre-IVF bloods, which discovered a few problems, etc., but getting lucky natually at 43 (LO born earlier this month!) -- your regular doctor should be able to do the routine bloods (which were reguired by the IVF clinic we were going to use/attended for first appointments), which include thyroid, FH and LH levels, also iron, blood panel, etc. They also wanted AMH (which is a specialised blood test, for which we had to go 'private' in Ireland), this tells you the level of eggs in your 'reserve', but it shouldn't be looked at separately from all the other numbers, particularly FH and LH (the three together need to be evaulated!). I also did blood work for all STDs (HIV, etc) as part of the panel of necessary blood tests.

There is a good book called '3 Steps to Fertility' by Marina Nicols (sp) that goes through alot of the background to assisted reproduction and explains how the various tests/hormones interact, for instance, in my case, in January 2011, my LH and FH were not equal (one was 16 and the other 12), but after it was discovered that I had underactive thyroid and medication was given, repeat bloods in May 2011 showed LH at 10ish and FH at 10.8 and I got pregnant naturally the next month as 'everything seemed in sync'; also my AMH was low in January at 4, but after acupuncture (recommended for pre-IVF), it 'increased' to in the low teens (10-14, not sure of exact figures, sorry) --

My GP also gave me metformin for PCOS and with gentle exercise, slow but steady weight loss and a few other life-style changes, we were ready to start IVF proper, but as I said, I got pregnant naturally and up until 32wks, my pregnancy was good (hypertension developed for the first time ever and then pre-eclampsia), so your losses (like mine - a mc in 2009 and then two possible chemicals) could be just 'bad luck' (sigh), but it is possible to get pregnant successfully post-40!

best wishes

ps. even if the AMH egg reserve is 'low', remember it only takes 1 good egg to get through! and I would definitely check your thyroid, especially if you have successfully had children before (it probably meant the final key in my successful later pregnancy!)
