I was under the impression that medical grade lanolin (ie the lanolin in lansinoh) was non allergenic. However i have sore nips and i just put a thin layer on (have been putting breastmilk on and air drying but have got slightly crusty scabbed bit on the end of nipple so thought i'd try lanolin) and shortly after was in considerably more pain. Could this be an allergic reaction or does the lanolin have to soak in or something and sting before it starts working?

If there is such a thing as being allergic to medical grade lanolin is there a different lanolin free nipple cream i could use?

(I am aware the sore nips is due to some latch issues which we're working on, literally just trying to ease a bit of discomfort whilst the problem is resolved  )

My nipples are sore but not bleeding or crusty. However, Lanolin has always been cool and soothing, it's never stung x

Yes it is possible. Lanolin is quite allergenic in itself it's one reason why it was removed from many products over the years, when I was young it was in everything from baby wipes to most skin creams. I do wonder if I am allergic to lanolin myself as I used to get a burning feeling if I used face creams with lanolin in, and also had permanently pink and burning nipples when I used lansinoh with my other kids. I always thought it was the starting a of thrush or an off latch but I used coconut oil as an alternative this time and didn't have the problem at all. Xx

Brilliant, i might look for coconut oil then. Actually less sore today, realised that my bad posture was affecting her latch and just Sitting up straight has made a huge difference!

Yes! My mums allergic to lanolin, was the reason she had to stop breastfeeding my brother after 5 weeks as the midwife made her put the new nipple cream on that they had been given and it had lanolin in it.
Be careful as lanolin is in lots of things including sudocream, and all nipple creams (I developed an allergy/irritation to it whilst pregnant, but thankfully it disappeared after my son was born).
