to take the glass out of a gas fire?

MIL's gas fire is awkward to light it's one you have to turn and turn to ignite but about bonfire night it seemed too refuse to ignite so she took the glass front off the fire and lit the gas with matches..this went on a few days then she just left the glass out of the fire. It doesn't take long for the house to warm up now quicker than normal, sometimes it's like a furnace she thinks it's wonderful because when you go upstairs is like an ice box...i assume this is where i have gotten my cold from.

Im just wondering though if this is in anyway dangerous? I mean if there wasn't something wouldn't all gas fires have no glass or am i just worried for nothing!?

Husband is gas engineer, and says its not safe at all, get a carbon monoxide detector, make sure it's fitted above door level, it's sure to go off. Wind conditions/ weather outside can affect how fumes go up chimney so may not go right away. But yes it will be letting fumes into room.
