We've moved to a new house which is bigger but it's freezing!!! At night even with heat pump on in the hall our room is going down to 12c and I haven't seen the power bill yet. Then during the day we can't very easily heat the pratof the house with bedroom so same deal.
I have a merino sleeping bag and put lo in lots of layers and when I unwrap him to change him his body is always warm (cold hands is all.

He sleeps well at night too from 7 to 4 so is this still too cold? I never though much of cold houses before lo and our last rental was easy to heat.

It's about that cold here too and my kids are fine, I don't think 12 degrees is really all that cold. We don't have any heating.

I converted to Fahrenheit and that's 53, I wouldn't be comfortable myself that cold, let alone lo, I'd be afraid he was too cold. I set the thermostat at 63, I think that was 17ish, and I'm still cold but lo seems alright at that temp.

It's 13 degrees here now, Sophie has 2 layers of clothing on and is swaddled and in a sleeping bag, she's lovely and toasty warm. I'm in sweat pants and have a light fleece blanket on my lap and I'm cosy.

53 degrees Fahrenheit is way too cold in my opinion and I would be worried your LO may get a cold. Make sure you wrap him really well and have plenty of blankets. I don't know what to suggest to make it warmer in your home but I would google some tips or contact the landlord.

If he's fine when you change him I wouldn't worry about it. Colds are viral, they aren't caused by cold weather. Just keep him nice and wrapped up.

It's even colder than that here and I have the same problem, the heat pump is at the other end of the house from the boys' rooms. I've resorted to a fan heater in Liam's for half the night to take the chill out of the air, but Eamon can't be trusted with one in his room and he won't use blankets. It's not good!

I'm really struggling with the cold an LO. We moved south in January and I haven't felt winter this cold in years! I get so worried about LO. It is about 13 here at the moment I am so thankful we have a fireplace x

I checked out the watts of my fan heater and its 2000 watt and it uses 28 cents an hour in power. I did some adding up on my phone and it was about $75 over 3 month power bill using the heater only 3 hours a day  I change LO nappiy in front of it.

We are using close to $100 in power a week atm it's f*cking ridiculous. We only have one energy provider in Tasmania and they rob everyone blind. Two winters ago I had a $1300 power bill for 3 months. It's disgusting.

we had this problem and i didnt want to heat a huge house all night so we bought an oil fille radiator for her room which worked a treat. I personally think 12 degrees is way too cold. x

Wow! That is a huge bill. We pay about $100 a month.

I must be well insulated, I'm not feeling all that cold and it's winter and night time. Even Thomas sweats in bed this time of year. He can only tollerate one blanket, he's a warm person like me. Sophie likes more layers but I definitely wouldn't be heating the room up or adding any more layers, she'd overheat.

12 degrees is very mild I would think? Mild for winter anyway which it is here.

Does anyone in Australia know how expensive oil heaters are to run? I'm scared to find out but I gotta do something here, lol.

We live in a big old brick house that's very drafty and laid out stupidly so that some rooms don't get heated at all by the heat pump (which is almost as bad as the fan heater to run). Eamon won't use any doona or blanket, so we physically have to go into his room when he's asleep and put it over him or he'd freeze. Don't know what we're going to do when winter really hits.

Wow you guys have it so cheap for power in NZ compared to here in Tassie! Lucky you *jealous* Paying $400 a month almost makes it unliveable as we just can't afford anything. Food here is so expensive, so is rent, so is everything... we just get fully smashed here. Tough times we are in :(

Ya know what, us kiwis always see Oz as this magical place where people get paid heaps and everything is super cheap! I guess not.

Our power is so low because we make huge efforts to keep it that way. We are so poor we all share a bath and then we use the bath water to fill the toilet cistern with a bucket for the next couple of days (water bill was real high last time). We don't have any heating, just sit under blankets if it gets cold.

The bill was closer to $200 a month when OH had the TV and PS3 going all day and was having long showers.

You said your baby is warm and sleeps well so I'd say the temp is fine.

How did those babies live before the days of central heating lol.

Ps to a pp, you don't catch a cold from being cold...

here in the uk they say for a baby to be able to control their own body's internal thermostat correctly a room needs to be heated to 18C.

Bahaha here we get smashed for rent, we pay almost $300 a week where we are and it's not even in town, it's 20 mins out. Grocery shop this week was $230 and that's buying almost everything store brand. Water bill we only pay excess as the owners are responsible for that in this lease so that isn't so bad. Petrol I'm not sure what's expensive as I don't drive but OH pays $200 for a full tank, $1.30 a litre here.

For power there's sweet FA we can do, the tariffs are so high it's impossible to get below even $40 a week even living like monks lol. If we had no heating we would freeze in this big old house, high ceilings, wood floors... it sucks. Even in a thick dressing gown with no heating I'm still cold :(

Ooh that is worth looking into. Would it be safe to have one in a toddler's room do you think?

We'd be screwed right now... :(

OMG It's $1.45 up here!

It has a 'trip' so if the heater falls over it automatically switches off. I think it'd be safe in toddlers room, you might just have to teach them not to touch it :) oh and it has a timer too, hth
