Joint accounts

I'm clueless. Are there joint accounts where you can transfer money in online, and use like a debit card? I tried looking on Money Saving Expert, but for the first time ever, he didn't have the answer I needed

:flower:

most banks have internet banking these days, which means that you can have debit cards but you can view your account and make transactions online. We are with HSBC and do most of ours online. Go into any bank and tell them what you want and they can advise on what they can offer you. What you are looking for is really basic in the world of banking so it won't be a problem at all!!

xx

Thank you! I've had the same account since I was at school with Natwest. The only thing that changed was when it changed to a grown up account  I don't like Natwest at all, would like to go with someone else, just not sure who. The money won't be staying in the account, it'll be in and out, so the interest ect isn't important.

just be careful if you swap banks hun! i wanted to change from tsb to natwest but i have a really good credit rating never been in my overdraft ect and if id have swapped to a new bank i would have lost all my credit rating so if you have one while your not working id suggest getting a joint account at natwest! x

Can I not keep my account at Natwest but open a joint one somewhere else? Does it not work like that?

yeh you could do that! but youd be better just getting both accounts at natwest as it will help alot with credit rating for if you ever want a mortage! natwest at the mo have the best internet banking they do same day money transfers between accounts where as tsb can take up to 3 days!
you should be able to open an account any where some banks are turning people down cos of the ressecion! x

My online account doesn't let me do bank transfers, or anything. It's never up to date properly. It tells me my account balance wrong. Drives me mad!

maybe just nip in to the bank then hun as there mite be a fault! my mum uses natwest and there really good fr internet banking compared to my bank! it might just be that it needs up grading! x

Im with Yorkshire and we have the basic basic account for wedding saving, I can use chip and pin and transfer money in and out but can't set up direct debits to go out because its a saving account. I still have an account somewhere else with about 4p in it which is there as a just incase I need an overdraft. I manage it all online, its really easy to use and shows up transactions really quickly, whereas my OH has an account with nationwide and it takes ages for stuff to show up

Im with yorkshire bank and there internet banking is really good and really upto date. If i buy something online and then go straight to check my balance the transaction will have showed up straight away. I have a savings account and current account with them

we have a joint account with hsbc... debits cards, internet transfers etc xx

Your spendable balance will hardly ever match the shown balance. You should have two though. Balance and balance available as money always takes a day or two to come out once spent. Not the banks fault, it's the shops.

We were looking online the other day (as we want to open another joint account) and when we logged onto HSBC (as we are with them for our others) they are advertising that if you change your bank to them fully (as you mentioned you may be looking to do) then depending on the account you open, you can get up to £100 cash back from them. May be worth looking into for your needs and if you can get some money from them too, then fab! We haven't looked into it enough for me to be able to give you any more info though - might be worth a look though. xx

If your thinking of opening up a new bank account i would join Quidco if your not already on there,

Starbucks, got £100 for swapping her bank account to Alliance and Liecster (from a&l) and also quidco will give her £50 in a few months for switching) Also Halifax are doing an account where if you pay in £1000 a month they give you £5, but from the guys at MSE you can do things like put £200 in, withdraw it, put it back in agin etc... Its just got to have £1000 go in it doesnt actually have to stay there, Not sure if there is cashback through quidco on that one!

She is thinking of doing that 1 too... £5 a month is £60 a year extra for nothing!

Might be worth checking with them that there's not a particular problem with yours as i'm with Natwest and its usually very accurate and I can do bank transfers (between accounts and to other people) and if they're with certain banks it'll be an instant transfer, set up direct debits/standing orders, activate new cards etc all from the Internet banking system.

Also... one login shows the details for all your accounts. I have an e-isa, e-savings account, joint account, student account and credit card with natwest and can view them all from one login and can transfer between them.

The only time my balance isn't correct is if the store is taking a while to process my transaction. E.g Primark refunds seem to take a couple of weeks to go through. However, a lot of my spends show up almost instantly and the rest show up in a few hours. It's not very often that I have to wait for a transaction to show up on my online banking. It can take longer for it to display where the spend originated from etc but the amount is usually there quickly.

Good luck :)

I was with NatWest but have had Lots of trouble with them and there bank charges one single charge was £418 =O so i am currently taking them to court but thats a whole other story lol so i have switched to yorkshire they are really good! there online banking is really fast and up to date! hope this helped

Ditto this! I have done all my banking online for years, it's so handy.

Is this true? I thought that your credit rating was recorded by companies external to your bank, which is why all of your bank accounts, credit cards, loans from wherever etc show up on it, rather than just showing the one bank. Am I completely wrong?

Hi hon,
Normally your credit rating should go with you whichever bank you're with.
Most banks do joint accounts. They are exactly the same as normal (single) accounts except that they are shared.
My DH and I had separate accounts we were paying for (to get travel insurance and other benefits). Now we have a joint account we pay the same fee but only once and we both get the benefits which is quite neat :)
We still have our accounts from before but downgraded them to free ones. We have debit cards on each account and can transfer from one to another online with no problems. My DH can't see my personal account, though, and I can't see his when I go online. We both can see the joint one.
