Hi ladies,

I'm in the UK and 30 weeks along in my 2nd pregnancy. I've just got a call from my midwife saying after the fasting 2hr GTT that i have GD. She wouldn't give me my levels (she's posting them out and they'll be in my notes) and is transferring me to an even further away hospital to see the specialists there as soon as Monday (they're calling back for an appointment) to get things rolling.

A few facts: i always have been overweigt, i wasn't diagnosed with this in my previous pregnancy 9 years ago BUT i did have exhaustion through the latter stages of it and he came a week and a half early in a quick and ferocious labour. This time round i had severe long lasting morning sickness to about 22 weeks, i have been exhausted again needing regular naps during the day and evening, i have had 4 or 5 episodes of spotting including one big gush bleed that i had to be hospitalised for a month ago, i'm being monitored for high BP and LASTLY baby seems to be stuck in transition/breech position due to space and anterior placenta...

I just feel at a bit of a loss at the moment and i don't know what's going to happen on any of these fronts. I feel like i'm losing control of my pregnancy and no one around me really gets it as all my other friends pregnancies have been relatively uncomplicated. Would any of you be able to tell me what i can expect from my first meeting with the GD specialist? Are any of you also suffering with high BP or have a breech bub in there? Do you think i'll have a chance at delivering normally (if he turns)? Sorry for the ramble, i'm just feeling a little lost xox

Hi! I think all of us with GD went through the same emotions you are going through right now. There is a very long GD support thread with lots of useful information, but here are some of the highlights for your first week or so.

The GD specialist will most likely walk you through checking your blood sugar levels and let you know how often you need to check (a few common themes seems to be either 4 times a day - fasting, and then 1 hr after meals; or 2 hrs after meals). You may also discuss things with a dietician. You will be told the importance of cutting out refined sugars but that you still need to eat a decent amount of carbohydrate, preferably low glycemic index (GI).

I don't have high BP or breech right now, but there are lots of other ladies with GD and I believe some of them have experienced the same complications you are facing.

:hugs: Hang in there!

Thank you so much for your response and advice! :hugs: I'm going to settle down and read though the GD support thread a little later on today. I got my appointment letter this morning too (less than 24 hours!) which i'm attending on Wednesday, annoyingly my son's first day back at school but hey, gotta be done. I'm feeling much more positive about things now, so thank you again hun for taking the time to write. xox
