I'm just finishing off my hospital bag and I want to pack some snacks for during labour. I'm probably going to be induced in a couple of weeks, due to gestational diabetes. The leaflet I was given says I can eat during labour but to stick to low fat things once in established labour. It's not specific for people with GD though so it doesn't say what sort of things to take. Just wondering what everyone else smacked on.

I do have a bar of chocolate for after the birth though :)

i'm not sure, sorry! maybe some crackers? i got nauseated a few times during labor so i was wishing for crackers in those moments.

i wasn't allowed to eat during labor :( you're lucky! i was SOOO hungry towards the end. it was terrible, lol - hungry and in pain. afterwards i ate...wait for it...TACO BELL. yep. i sent hubby out asap while baby was under the light because i needed a taco bell fix. how terrible!

Crackers might be a good idea, although some can be greasy. Maybe some plain biscuits/cookies would be ok. I have a check up tomorrow, so I'll ask then what they suggest.

Maybe peanut butter crackers? That way there's a bit of protein, too.

I'm not a big fan of peanut butter. I wouldn't want to be messing about spreading things on crackers while I'm in labour either, I'm hoping to find something I can buy ready made that will stay fresh for the next couple of weeks.

Do you not have ready made peanut butter crackers where you live? They come in packs of 6 here or you can get boxes of them. I wouldn't expect someone to be spreading pb on crackers during labor, lol. What a mess.

I've never seen anything like that in the UK, but maybe we do and I just haven't noticed. I didn't gets lot of advice at the clinic. They mostly said that I might not be hungry and to avoid high sugar things. Maybe have crackers and cheese or a small sandwich and to eat little and often just in case I need a c-section.

Are you on insulin or diet controlled?

I was really nervous of my blood sugar going over 7.5 else I would have been put on a sliding scale of insulin. They tested me every hour in labour so I didn't want to risk a spike.

Both times I ate nuts, cheese, hummus and a little bit of diabetic chocolate x

I'm diet controlled. They told me that my sugars would be monitored during labour but didn't say how often. Those snacks are a good idea. I don't want to go high but at the same time I want to make sure I don't go low and have enough energy to get me through too.

It is minimum every hour in established labour monitoring.

I suggest nuts for energy. You really don't want to go high not long before baby is born.

You will find the energy for the labour don't worry - I had. 36 hour labour with my eldest and an all day induction with my youngest. I reallllllly enjoyed that toast and jam both times afterwards though!

I've heard that the toast afterwards is the best toast you'll ever eat in your life :)

I do have a bar of chocolate in my hospital for after I've given birth though.

I had GD from 16 weeks the second time and did diet control to the very end. I was so so hungry. My post birth binge was 2 snickers bars, a chocolate covered cereal bar and a packet of crisps

I gave birth at just before 11pm and was probably binging at about 1am. They tested my blood sugar at 8am the next day and it was 11.9

Lord knows how high it went. The hormones responsible for GD definitely took a while to leave my system the second time. It didnt cause any issues though.

After my elder daughter was born I ordered visitors to bring mince pies and orange juice!

......I GOT really obsessed with food :haha:

I didn't have GD but I didn't eat anything during my 13 hour labour with DD, I had no interest in food - the liquids that I did drink I threw up all over the midwife although she was a dab hand at catching most of it in 2 of this big paper mache dishes :D
