Hi

We are really hoping that we can do Lapland next year when DS 2 will have turned 4. Has anyone been and can recommend it?

Thanks

I went - but this was back in 2009 for one of those one day things. Probably others will comment who have been there more recently. This is what I remember:

Its a VERY long day for kids. By the time we came home we had been up a solid 24 hours (plane was frozen on way back and they had to wait for it to defrost before it could take off) My son was older about 9 so wasnt too bad and i suppose younger kids would sleep

Its hard to explain how cold it is. We had all the thermals etc and that was great BUT one pair of thermal socks wont cut it and as you are outside all day your feet are absolutely frozen - so wear a couple of pairs each!

Another point - for some little ones - under three ish - it was just too cold. A lot of them spent time sitting on the bus because of that

Normal cameras wont work there.

It is breathtakingly beautiful - I thought i was in a snowglobe. It didnt even feel real it was really magical.

The activites were good - sleigh riding etc. You were in small groups and had to wait your turn but i dont remember it being too bad.

Its entirely uncommercialised - there was NOTHING i wanted to buy. Nothing at all. To be honest this disappointed me a bit (if Im honest in my mind it should look like the village in the Santa Clause) It doesnt. And even though i totally knew that going in i was still disappointed at how sparse it was. You certainly dont get any impression of any activity going on around there

Lunch was very simple - and it was reindeer. So it was a bit strange for me because they are quite open about that. So kids kids, meet Rudolph, stroke the reindeer, love the reindeer...lunch - EAT the reindeer!

Santa was a massive massive disappointment. He sounded like he was on drugs with slurred really slow speech - nothing like the jolly fat soul we think of.

All that being said its an experience Im so glad I did (i had searched it longingly for years before i bit the bullet and did it) However my son found out the truth about a month before we went and Im glad he did - Im not sure you can marry what you will experience there with the commercial image kids have. Maybe when they are younger but not the 'middle believing years'

Will I go back? Since that trip I have had 2 more kids and I will take them for sure BUT i will likely go when they are a bit older.

Hope that helps and doesnt sound too negative - remember there are lots of places / companies running this so others may be better

We are going this year so will answer this when I am back, we are going Wednesday to Sunday a week before Christmas. Very excited, we are telling the children at the airport

Thanks everyone. Yeh pingu i think thats what we would like to do. I like the idea of a 3 night trip x
