London!!!

Also OP- if you have children you may want to go and check out Hamleys! I'm going there tomorrow to buy *more* :)haha:) Christmas presents

But then you have to go near the chavvy dump that is Oxford Street lol....

Sorry but are you really telling me you disagree...its a dump.

I'm only joshing with you sorry it's hard by forum! But no I don't think it's a dump, I like Oxford Circus and I sometimes have to pop into the London College of Fashion for work just off Oxford Street I quite like the busy atmosphere and love the big shop fronts, I love the big Top Shop, H&M, Liberty and Selfridges...buuuuut I don't shop there because it's just too busy! We were there on Saturday (just walking through from Hyde Park to Hamleys lol) not realising it was one of the pedestrianised weekends....uuuucccch!! So yeah I wouldn't send people to Oxford Street for shopping unless they have pointy elbows and grit determination!

No no not at all you have a valid point I didn't want to sound bitchy lol :) it's definitely one of those places bigged up way too much. I hope you have had fun here, do you go to Westfield in Stratford or White City area? Hoping to take LO to Santa's grotto at Westfield soon :)

I hate Oxford street! In my 18 years of living in London I only went to Oxford street maybe 3 times? It is so soulless, London is so good for markets and independent shops, plus there is always some kind of protest and it is just so stressful!

And getting an oyster card is definitely worth it! It's cheaper, if you put a decent amount on it then you wont have to stand in any horrific queues for a train ticket all weekend and you can use them on buses. Day travel cards are a massive rip off.

I love notting hill and portobello market, going out for drinks in brick lane, having lunch in covent garden, obviously to to china town if you are going to the west end!

Sorry have only just had time to reply.

Again thanks for the replies from everyone :)

Will maybe give Oxford St a miss as I get really aggitated in crowds and most of the shops there I can probs go to in Glasgow anyway.

Looked at the top secret hotel website and one I saw was in Kensington is that a good area for getting places? Another was Knightsbridge. As you can see I know nothing about London or it's areas. I'm a definite tourist!

If we get a hotel in any area is everything within ok travel distance?

Xx

A day travel card after 9:30 am is £7 and an oyster off peak is capped at £7 its exactly the same price.

Oh well now I feel silly :haha: I haven't bought a day travel card in years I thought they were more expensive. I still think an oyster card is better for a whole weekend as you won't have to queue for a ticket at all if you put enough money on the oyster.

It used to be less than £1 diff about 5 years ago but i think its recently changed. I just got that info from tfl website,i never use a paper card.

Op how will you be traveling to london? If its the train i reccomend getting a young persons railcard,if you book enough in advance you can save LOTS of money,i recently travelled from london to glasgow during english halfterm for £13. If you decide to use the oystercard in london then you can register your railcard onto the oyster at a ticket office and it makes journeys cheaper offpeak. If you get a paper travelcard for london and buy it from a national rail office then you can use it as a 2for1 off at some attractions. Really all dependant on what you are planning to do in london.

Yeah Kensington and Knightsbridge are lovely areas and great for getting around :)

Yes we will probably go by train. Is the initial £28 outlay worth the saving?

We don't use the train at any other time xx

If you don't use the train any other time I wouldn't waste money buying a railcard

Tickets get released 12 weeks in advance and the are always really good deals to be had by buying tickets early. You won't be able to check just yet but you could be looking at tickets now for feb and see what kind of prices you would be looking at

Also if you travel from a wee station always check the fare from the nearest major station and buy the other part separate. Where I live it is always cheaper to travel either from the station before me, or the one after me, as they are main stations whereas mine is just a local which has one train an hour stop.

I have had dundee to London available for as little as £6 on an advance single before

I always used to go into our local ticket office the guy was lovely and would look at the best options, when you do it online it automatically does the fastest routes which is more expensive and things but this fella would show us different and slower routes to get it cheaper :)

The K West Hotel in Kensignton is by far the best hotel i have ever stayed in. It super modern and real funky, has a Spa, resturant and night club...and they do real good weekend deals!

it within walking distance of shepherd bush westfield shopping centre and like two stops away from leicester square so for all the resturants and shows.

a good place to eat is one new change (a upmarket shopping centre next to st pauls's) has an amazing roof top cocktail bar where you can see the whole of london (called madisons) also has Jaimes Oliver barbeco resturant which does lovely food for not to bad a price. also just round the corner is another cocktail bar called 2bar1 which does 241 from 5-8pm!

I also recomend somerset house as at this time of year they have a big ice rink set up, there also one next to the london eye and you can get a ticket which gets you both on the eye and rink!

and finally some of the big markets are a must...i personally love Camden town, or Portabello road market, Spiatalfields market...again this time of year is a must with all the xmas shopping.

ooh look on the national rail 241 website they brilliant deals to get into all the top london attractions you just need to show your rail card!
