Hi guys

Just got back from my appointment. We heard the heartbeat on the doppler and the nurse kept saying it was fine, but it sounded really slow. She measured it and said it was between 92-110 and that was totally normal.

Looking it up, that seems wrong.

I'm really upset now. I was planning to announce today, but what if there's something horribly wrong with my baby?

Anyway, I have a horrible chest infection, so I'll be back there this afternoon with the doctor who is kind of useless so I'll ask him about it, but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this?

I'm just gutted right now. I thought I'd be so happy after hearing it.

I understand your worry..that is low. For her to brush you off and say its fine without looking farther into it would make me upset. She's a nurse tho..did you talk to your doctor about it? If your doctor or midwife ignored it and didn't even look into it to give you peace of mind, I would be switching. I'm not trying to say anything is wrong...I'm saying that I understand your concern and it should be addressed. I would call my doctor and talk to him directly about it..not the nurse. If he says its nothing to be concerned about it, I would make a big deal about it and demand for it to be looked farther into.

Is there a chance that it wasn't even baby's heartbeat that she picked up and that it was just yours? x

Way too low for it to be baby! That doesn't make sense

I have come to the conclusion that the heartbeat we heard was mine. Partly because it got higher as I was getting more and more alarmed! Also, my heart rate will be high right now as I'm using an inhaler all the time.

Spoke to the doctor and he seemed completely unconcerned. Said it's hard to find a heartbeat at this early stage. There are loads of people who have their own Dopplers who've found the hb at much earlier weeks than this.

I am a bit "fluffy" though lol

Anyway, we do have a scan on Monday. And fortunately, I am so wrecked from my chest infection, I don't have the energy to get all worked up.

that wouldve been your hb raised by the infection. how incompetent. im a fluffy mum and still struggle to find my lg at 24 weeks sometimes

That nurse scares me lol. I wouldn't want to be in her care. I find baby's hb all the time on my Doppler since 9 weeks. I'm sure that was yours and not baby.

I'd be after a second opinion. Midwife found out baby's heartbeat easily at 11wks x

I've heard my babies heart beat on my doppler since 9 weeks. Strangely, the doctor can't find it when I go to there. Can't they do a scan or something for you so you feel better and an announce?

Really that is a low heart rate for baby but sounds just right for yours. Did it sound like swooshing or galloping sound? Baby's is kind of like a galloping sound. This nurse does not know what she is talking about so it seems. I would call and ask to speak to the Dr and see if you can get in and have the MD recheck for you. Baby's should be above 120. I really think she was picking up yours or the placenta as the Doppler with provide a reading for those also

I don't really have any choice in doctors, so I'll be staying, and he only has one nurse, but most of my pregnancy stuff will be done at the hospital anyway.

And our first hospital appointment is Monday, so hopefully then we'll get some reassurance.

Is there a chance that it wasn't even baby's heartbeat that she picked up and that it was just yours? x

that is what im thinking..i think she totally screwed up and picked yours up... since we al have a pulse right there it happens..

i would call the doctor with your concerns and if she did screw up i would complain expecially when you asked about it already...

Yeah that certainly sounds like she found your heart beat, not the baby's. I'd be pretty pissed. Especially because I've been able to find my baby's since I was got my doppler. The fact that she didnt even double check would disturb me, because if she can mess this up, what else will she mess up!

I wouldn't be so mad if she couldn't find the fetal heartbeat on doppler. Depending on a lot of factors it can indeed be difficult at 14 weeks.

But I would be very pissed indeed if she passed my heartbeat off as the baby's.

I could almost bet my last dollar that it was YOUR heartbeat she picked up.. She should know that too, they are meant to look for yours first..

Don't worry too much, I am 16 weeks and it took them ages to find bubs HB today, and kept getting mine because it kept moving around and kicking so much

Was this a nurse or a midwife? She sounds like knows squat tbh!!

My midwife won't even try to find a hb until 16 weeks. I'm pretty sure at that rate it would've been yours not the babies. What a complete moron to make you worry like this :(

:hugs:

It was a nurse and not a midwife. She was very nervous about the whole thing, it was weird, but she was insisting to me while I was shaking my head that it was the baby's heartbeat.

I was so worried. I knew the rate was way too low.

And then my wife said "I was surprised she could find it on both sides" and I was like "Oh, yeah, that's not possible."

But she was really insistent. Probably thought it would reassure us and she was being nice, but I'm smarter than that and while I have always had a super amount of faith in nurses (I was in and out of hospital a lot as a child, and I know who runs shit), I question medical professionals all the time, because I also know they're human and make mistakes (God, the mistakes I've noticed in the past...)

I wonder if I can switch all my ante natal care to the hospital (it's a combined care thing when you're pregnant here). I'll ask when I'm there.

Well..to be fair, you can actually find the heartbeat on both sides. On my Doppler, I was always able to hear the heartbeat on the far left and right side. However....that still does not excuse this nurses carelessness. It's careless to think that heart rate for a baby is normal and it's careless if it was your heartbeat and she couldn't tell the difference.

At my last appointment, the nurse found a heartbeat right away. She listened for a minute and knew right away that it was my heartbeat and not baby's. About a minute more of searching and she found baby's. It's a totally different sound. Baby's sounds like galloping horses.

I'm sorry that happened and I would be asking for it to be looked into farther. That was totally your heartbeat!
