I keep getting milk in my tube - what am I doing wrong?! I have cleaned it out as per the instructions ready to try again!

xx

Leave the pump running for a couple of minutes when you're not attached & condensation will disappear. If it's actually milk in there, take everything apart & re-put it back together. I had the Symphony, think they're quite similar. Also, if the diaphragms aren't on properly it draws milk up sometimes & likewise if you're letting the bottles over-fill.

Hope that helps! If not, give Medela a call- they're really helpful & efficient :-)

Thanks hon,

I have flushed it out and dried it out, but when I tried to use it again it did exactly the same. It doesn't empty out into the bottle until I take it off my boob.

It must be something wrong with the diaphragm - I will try again and if it doesn't work, give medela a call. Its good to know that they are helpful.

I have the same problem sometimes. I find what works for me is lifting the white membrane away from the rest of the valve for a second and then let it fall back into place. Sometimes after being washed it seems to stick to the valve and that causes the milk to build up and squirt backwards thru the tube (in my experience anyway).

Sometimes I have to repeat doing this two or three times and then the problem seems to be fixed. If it still persists after trying this maybe see if you can replace the membrane and see if that helps?

make sure all the tubes are in tight also:) mine are always coming loose!

If I steam sterilised it wasn't a problem, if I boiled or cold sterilised it was. The membrane gets stuck and the milk backs up. What to do is, before you put it on, give the membrane a quick flick to make sure it is free. When you start pumping, watch for some milk coming into the bottle, if it doesnt after a minute or so, take the shield off your breast and give the bottle a wee shake - the milk should come out and once it does that should be it fine. If the milk still doesn't come out, open the bottle and give the membrane a flick (I've only had to do that once)

You are doing nothing wrong; it's because it's an open system. Once milk gets in (which is after about 1 minute with me) you should stop pumping to let it clear then resume. If you continue, milk will work its way into the motor and this caused a problem for me which resulted in mothercare replacing my medela swing!

The white membrane just needs replacing. Mine would do this every so often and so I just replaced my white membrane and it hasn't happened since!

never had this problem but i always pat the memrane dry with a bit of paper towel before use. what is the function of the membrane anyway? OH and I were just discussing the membrane the other day and couldn't see why it was necessary.

as far as I can tell it's the membrane that creates the vaccuum necessary for the "sucking" action and at the same time allows the milk to drip down into the bottle/bag.

Thanks girls - definitely the membrane that is a problem.

It is working again now. I will try all of those things if I get the problem again.

xx

i had this the other day - first time for us and i realised that i hadn't been watching and i had my let down but not changed the setting so there wasn't enough time for the milk to be released into the bottom. As soon as i changed the setting it was fine. hope it's the same for you and not a bigger issue
