might be getting a kitten, what are the rule while preg??

Cats aren't a problem if you know how to handle them, if you are worried about them scratching things then lock the cats out of those rooms.

I don't like how some people on here have bought cats without even thinking about the consequences, eg scratching furniture, litter trays, noise and vomit. I feel sorry for the kittens people buy if they are just going to get rid of them within a few months, poor kitties.

Also the thing about cats suffocating babies is a myth and declawing is cruel >_<

I totally agree, no one would get a dog if they didnt want to take it for a walk would they, so why get a cat and not let it display its natural behaviour like stratching things and as for not cleaning up cat sick. I have one thing to say

DO NOT GET A CAT if you dont want to clean up a bit of mess.
Dont babies make a mess too, just a thought

Cats and kittens are totally fine, just dont change the cat litter. If you have to change the cat litter then wear gloves and dispose of them straight away. Its pretty simple.

Kittens are a different ball game and if your not prepared, or dont have the patience dont even try it.
They scratch, bite, and just climb on EVERYTHING. Its gonna be hard for you, mostly cause it just all around sucks.

You should try adopting an adult cat, one already litter trained, and needs lots of love. Maybe youll find one thats already declawed and neutered, with a microchip.

When you declaw a cat, the vet pretty much clips off the ends off the claw bed, it hurts your little kitty a whole lot.

I have a male cat and hes the bee's knees. He isnt declawed and we use a kitty tape on our couches to keep him from scratching. I find male cats are more loving too. :]

Good luck on your choices!!

Where on earth did it say that????????????????

I've had a number of kittens throughout my years! (Lol, im only 21!)
& I must admit we never seemed to have a problem with them at all. I might have just been lucky with my cats having a good temperament, but they've all seemed happy and playful and cute! They've never been an 'effort'!

Sure they poo, wee and be sick sometimes, but that's the joys of having an animal. It get's a lot easier when they can go out.

I currently have two cats in my household, one I adopted, she's a bit older, and one that i've had since she was a baby, she's about 2 or 3 now. They've never been a problem. I love them to pieces!

OH is being amazing and cleaning up any messes they make. I guess you just have to have someone who is prepared to do that for you! Or just take extra care when doing it yourself.

Get a kitten if you want one, in my opinion they aren't too much trouble, but you just have to keep an eye on them when they're that young. Puppies are a bit harder as you can't leave them on their own during the day and they need a lot of attention. Cat's are very independent as they get older. & im sure a kitten will be fine :) xx

well i did think of an adult cat but thought it would be better to get a kitten as then the cat will grow up with the children and not scratch them (i hope) as an older cat may have had bad experiences with children and may turn on them. so i think a kitten would be best for our family because then i can train her to not go upstairs or in the bedrooms, or go on the kitchen sides and things xx

I have 3 cats and I think if you want a kitten, get a kitten. You're a smart lady, have had cats before and already have a houseful of kids to help out. Just make sure you post a pic of the new kitten once you get for us all to see.

yep i think we will get one this week just been looking around to get a good price and a cutie. x

To bad you didnt live here, every thursday our local paper comes out with free kittens or for $10 or less.
Just make sure you do get the cat fixed. And keep him or her indoors. Outdoor kitties tend to eat random stuff and get into crazy fights. On the way home from lunch a poor cat got hit by a car, and his sad owner had to pick him up from the street.
I hope you find a kitten to love and care for, for many years to come!! XXXXX

I know places like SPCA always try to re-home cats according to their personality. They know when some cats are not friendly, or that cannot live together with other pets, etc. If you tell them that you are expecting a baby, probably would give you more suggestion about which cat to get. Probably there would be a sweet mature one that have lived before with young children also.

It is true that an adult cats may be less playful, and would probably spend more time sleeping than playing with your kids, but you would know what you are getting. A little kitten may be a surprise. I remember we used to have kitten as kids, and we always have our hands bitten or scratched.

Aww hun, I have three adorable furbabies so I am a big lover of cats. They bring so much joy and comfort into a house. Firstly I want to comment (I know you're not going to do it but it upset me so much, so this is intended for the person who originally commented about declawing)

When a cat is declawed it is not simply like cutting the nail off, they cut the whole nail out of the cats paw, it would be like someone chopping your finger off down to the knuckle. It's excruciating and painful for the cat and often turns them savage as they have no means of defense. It's illegal (thank god) in most countries, and those who do it are nothing but animals themselves!!!!

Now that's said....I am all for a kitten, one thing I suggest is you do your research on breeds. I think if you're willing to buy a kitten, shop around. Visit breeders and research what breeds are good with children. I own two Pedigree Ragdolls and a Pedigree Bengal. The raggies are PERFECT with children, the most gentle and loving animals around, the Bengal is a little shit stirer and probably not great with kids, but lots and lots of fun.

Our cats are indoor only, but they have a cat run built onto our house. So they have outside access. Hubby takes care of the kitty litter but we are slowly making the transition to move the kitty litter outside. Now you must be careful with not only changing the litter, but remember cats walk through kitty litter, so after handling ur cats be sure to sterilize your hands, and make sure you wipe down surfaces before preparing food on them also.

We intend on installing a screen door onto the nursery so the air and sound can vent through but the cats are kept out of the nursery...Especially while the baby is young.

Congratulations on bringing a new furkid into your house. :) They really are bundles of love

Here's my babies:

Love your cats! They are so beautiful. I love the markings and the spots on you bengal. It makes it look so wild! My Scottish Fold (the guy on my avatar) used to have some markings, but they have mostly vanished as he matured.

ahh your cats are lovely thanks for the advice, il probably buy from a breeder so they will be able to advice me on weather the cat is ok with children etc xx

Hi! Iv stayed out of the bickering etc in this thread but just wanted to say. Even though some breed of cats are more placid than others theyr pretty individual things, Buying a certain breed wont gurantee you they are going to be ok with children or what not its up to you to set some boundaries regardless if its a pedigree or a mix breed. A kitten is a kitten at the end of the Day. My friend has a Russian blue she swears hes the most calm cat ever but then she has no children. I myself had two snow bengals. One was completly placid his sister was a complete rocket!!! she used to run up the walls and everything! The Only thing iv found in MY Experience with cats and this isnt a general opinion or rule is that Male cats seem to be a bit more chilled out than females. Remember to get your kitty snipped too if you do decide to get one. anyway im not preaching to you just wanted to share my experiences with Cats

xx

we have a kitten, we got her for our boys for christmas just a few months early hehehee had her in October and well i convieved in the November....

She is a handful to say the least and very playful with the boys but they adore her!!! I have to be honest, pregnant or not im not sure if i made the correct decision purely being honest as she is really scratching my boys so much and distroying the house however a cat is for life and id not go back on it now and we are trying to train her the best we can at the moment. I tell ya one thing though i look at her and its like butter wouldnt melt she so darn cute and i cant be angry for long! hehehee....
