A lot of my questions on here seem to be food related

Meant to be having spag bol for dinner tonight. OH bought our mince in Tesco on Sunday and it's Organic lean mince. Its sell by date is today and it has gone quite brown in colour now, where as it was quite red to start with.

We had one like this a while ago but it was one we had frozen and my mum happened to see it and made us throw it away as she didn't think it was safe (she's mega paranoid about things like that).

Anyway, do you reckon it's safe to eat, seeing as I am pregnant? It has not been opened yet, so haven't sniffed it, but would it be very obvious it if was 'off?'

Can't be bothered going out to get more, but don't want to risk getting ill either :dohh:

Thanks ladies

me and oh had some steaks last night.. my dad always used to say to me it's best when the meat has gone a bit brown so it doesn't bother me too much.
But if your pregnant i'd probly chuck it :)

nah it'll be fine.

we often buy 21 day aged steaks from local farm shop - they are always brown and yummy. I still ate them when pregnant.

Also, if the sell by date is today then I cant see why it would be a problem  just make sure its cooked properly as with any ground meat.

It should be fine, just make sure it is cooked through, obv if it smells funny chuck it, but otherwise should be ok!

Yeah if it does not smell funny I would eat it, its not passed the sell by date so will be fine, just cook it really well x

I'd just smell it too, you will def know if its off, especially being pregnant :D

Thanks ladies. Have had a sniff and it smells fine so I think I will risk it and make sure it's cooked really well.

xxx

I agree, good meat usually is browny anyway :)

Im like your mum mega fussy lol... so i would throw it.

really red beef isn't fresher, people think it is when in reality it is where they have mixed blood with it to make it look healthier, you find if you get the more expensive cuts of beef it is generally a touch darker/browner because it's all natural, nothing added :)

so organic lean mince should look darker/ browner :)

I agree. I would eat it.

oh tells me its oxidised  something to do with them not being allowed to put preservatives in it - but its ook to eat lol

Ahh thanks everyone. Well we ate it, and it was blimmin lovely ;) Feeling fine today, phew xx

I think he's right. They pack it with sme sort of as in supermarket packaging, so it looks 'nice' and bright red for consumers. Meat really isn't supposed to look like that though. If you buy beef from a really good butcher, it is always brownish in colour, whether it is steaks, a joint or mince.

It will be fine. It would probably still be fine tomorrow, they have to err on the side of caution with these things.

this ALWAYS happens to us- even before the use by date! we chuck it :haha:

Such a waste to chuck food away :nope: my step-mum is terrible for this and she always throws stuff away as soon as it hits its "best before" date,as if it turns to poison on that day or something :dohh:
Glad you survived the meal though.lol

if its been in the fridge itll be more than fine all the best meat is a little browen in colour :)

Brown basically just means it has been exposed to oxygen a bit. If not all of it is brown and it is only little patches, then it is alright just cook it well(but since youre doing a bolognese thats whats being done anyway)
