Just wondering what this means? Up until now he has been free but is now 4/5ths. This is my 3rd and don't want him coming anytime soon! I can't remember what all this meant.

If it says 4/5 on your notes that's the amount that's palpable, in other words, baby is 1/5 engaged I think. Sounds about right as I was the same at my 34 week check.

Was it your first baby and did you go into labour early?

Agreed. Baby is 1/5 engaged. Nothing to worry about. It's normal. Baby can be engaged for weeks and weeks! Some woman are 3cm dilated and baby is fully engaged for weeks. It's. Nothing to worry about :) xxx

I also had my 34 week check today and was 4/5ths engaged too. She said that it meant 1/5 was actually engaged. All a bit confusing! Seems to be about right for 34 weeks as she didn't seem to think anything of it.

It's all about fingers (apparently!)

They measure how far out of the engaged position the baby's head is in "fingers" or fifths. So if you are 5/5 engaged, the babies head is not at all in the pelvic area, the midwife can measure 5 fingers widths of his head still out of the pelvis.

As you get to 4/5 engaged, she can only measure 4 fingers out of the pelvis, so 1 finger (or 1 fifth) is IN the pelvis.

Then by the time you get to 1/5 engaged she can only measure 1 finger out of the pelvis, so 4/5 is in the launch position ready to be ejected!

Apparently!
